Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the United States Marine Corps
Second World War
During the First World War Marines wore the shoulder sleeve insignia of the Second Division and also developed their own patch for the
Fifth Marine Brigade. During World War Two shoulder sleeve insignia were approved on March 15, 1943.
The wearing of shoulder sleeve insignia was disallowed (effective January 1, 1948) by Letter of Instruction Number 1499 of
September 23, 1947. Uniforms having U.S. Marine Corps shoulder sleeve insignia are likely
to be World War Two period. Marine shoulder sleeve insignia have been reproduced in the post war period.
