CAMARO TECH
The addition of a performance exhaust system has always been one of the first items that people do to their cars. I recomend that a camaro enthusiast start here for performance upgrades. The reasoning behind this is that V8 Camaros (350's) have corcked up versions of the Corvette engines (Reasonably, GM doesn't want Camaros to match the performance of Corvettes). The ways GM traditionally has corcked up the engine is in induction, exhaust, and cylinder heads. The following will cover how to improve and give opinions about what woked for me on the exhaust end of the corcked up triad.
Cat Back Systems
As the name implies, these exhaust upgrades tke place from the catalytic converter back. Improvements of 15-10 horsepower can achieved from one of these systems. I have worked with Dynomax, Flowmaster, RKsport, SLP and GM performance exhaust systems. In my opinion, all of these systems have delivered excellent resultss and all probably come with in hairs of providing the same Horsepower improvement. The buyer must then base their choice on sound, appereance, and cost.
SLP SS/WS6 take off exhaust
By far the least expensive exhaust system is the SLP 98 SS take off exhaust ($99). However, this exhaust system is muffler back. I am very satisfied with the power and sound it made in both the V6 3800 and and V8 LT1 Camaros. SLP claims it makes up to 12 horses in either one of these applications. All stainless steel and great looking tips make this exhaust a no brainer.
Dynomax
Dynomax also has great HP increases without emptying the bank. The Dynomax sound tends to be a low throaty sound and is reminisent of the 60's. However, chrome tips are not included. They use two muffler types an inexpensive super turbo design and a more expensive straight through design. I have heard that they make around the same horsepower but the super turbo is louder. Also, the straight through is a stainless steel ahile the other piece is aluminized.
RK sport
The RK sport exhaust system is the priciest of the bunch (279). The high price comes from the butiful stainless steel rolled tips that come with the kit. It also comes with a black coating over that aluminized pipes and muffler to help improve durability. This system uses a dynomax superturbo muffler as the center piece of the system. Its sound is the same as the dynomax system.
Flowmaster
Flowmaster uses a chamber system in the muffler that not only achieves great horsepower but a great sound. The sound is described as a high pitchy snarl sort of like a panther or cheeta snarl. This system does not include tips.
Edelbrock
Elderblock exhaust systems feature a straight through perforated design and are made of stainless steel. This particular system has strong recomendations from our guest Jared Dunn. According to Edelbrock tests: a 10 to 70 mph run with a Z28 cat-back system improved by an avarage of .43 seconds.
