PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE GETTING MARRIED

Something that no-one should have to think about - but must; is protecting your home from intruders during the wedding. We have all seen it on the news: families whose homes were burglarized while on vacation, while at a funeral of their loved one and/or while the family is at a wedding.  To stop criminals in their tracks, a few extra precautions can save you a lot of time, grief and despair.

First things first. When couples place their engagement and/or wedding announcements in the local paper, they usually make an announcement of: their names, employers, and date the date that they will be gone all day at their wedding and reception. Any experienced (or non-experienced (for that matter)) criminial knows that there will be bridal shower gifts, cash gifts, cards with money and store-bought gifts at the home. So be a bit more general in your engagement/wedding announcement. Instead of the exact wedding date, word it more vague, i.e.,  "A fall wedding is planned" or "The couple plans a beautiful outdoor wedding in early fall". As far as the places of employment, leave it out; if you think about it, it’s only filler text and not really necessary.

• When returning home from your shower with gifts, try to have as many people help you unpack the car as you can.  Carrying one load in attracts much less attention than four or five trips.
• Unpack as many gifts as you can. If a break in happens, gifts that are in their original boxes are normally grabbed first. For example, a burglar is much more likely to grab your $500 T.V. set still in the original box, than they will look for crystal, silver and breakables
•  Deposit monetary gifts in a bank account immediately. Inform your delivery persons to deliver with your signature only, to not leave any packages at the door (and don't tell them why) 
• Ask your postmaster to hold your mail while on your honeymoon or better yet, have a friend or family member stop by at random times on different days while you're gone to pick up your mail and check on things. 
• During the wedding (or shower), if you have someone who can house sit for your, ask them to, 
• Set your lights with timers along with radios or TV's as well, make it "sound" like someone is home. 
• Last but not least, when changing your name on credit cards, or other important documents, always use a "corded" phone. You don't want to be announcing your social security number, mother’s maiden name or credit card numbers over cordless phone waves. Cordless phones are very easy to eavesdrop on.

Just a few precautionary steps can make a huge difference in protecting yourself and your home during this wonderful event. Don't make it easy for a crime to happen and don’t put yourself in a needless situation..
