Welcome to Our homeschooling Pages

More and more people are choosing home-education as a viable alternative to mainstream public or private schools. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states. People choose to home-educate for many different reasons. In our family, we homeschooled our oldest son Tommy for 2 1/2 years, 4.5th through 6th grades. He is very bright and gifted with dyslexia and adhd. Tommy's learning differences made it difficult for him to reach his true potential in the public school classroom environment. Homeschooling allowed us to work with him one on one and use the teaching methods that worked best with his style of learning. Today, Tommy is now well integrated into the 7th grade in our public school system. He is maintaining a 3.o+ gpa, plays clarinet in the band and exhibits a social maturity that is equal or above that of his peers. Tommy benefitted greatly from the years we homeschooled and now he is a better student.

Homeschooling does not have to be an all or nothing way of education. Every child is different and their needs change over time. Our daughter Ana,age 8 and our youngest son, Eddie, age 4, are both in public schools, but they also benefitted from the homeschooling activities. Ana is a very active child and can be a handful, but she is very bright. Eddie is speech-delayed and we are at the beginning of helping him in his educational journey. We have been blessed with a school system which continued to work with us as we home-educated. It continued to provide speech/language therapy as per Tommy's IEP, work with us with Ana's attention lapses and has an excellent preK/ESE program that is helping Eddie as well.

Our children are precious to us. As parents, we are responsible for our children's education and growth. We stay involved in their educational and provide them with learning opportunities, as well as books, tools, gadgets and science equipment, computers, learning games and hands-on activity kits. We have an on-going backyard habitat project which includes nesting boxes, bird and other critter feeders and a small weather station. We are also in the progress of setting up a small amateur (ham) radio station.

Our faith is important to us, so our children also go to Sunday school and are involved in church activities. We belong to a tiny Catholic mission church, Our Lady Queen of Peace here in the middle of the "Baptist Bible Belt." Tommy is a regular altar server, Ana is in the choir and all three children attend religious education classes. I help teach Sunday school and am a member of the ladies Altar and Rosary Society.

We learn as a family. We believe children learn through play and interaction with the world around them. We all do, even as adults. Playtime is just as important as formal education. Learning is everywhere and should be a wonderful, fun, life-long endeavor.
