Fragile Heart

Jacqueline’s Junque

Over time and circumstance
Taking stone by stone,
She built a wall around her heart
And sat inside alone.

She let no one get past it
Keeping up her strong protection,
Proclaiming that she had no needs
Not wanting a connection.

On the outside was a person
Strong like the outer shell,
But deep inside a fragile heart
Trapped in a living hell.

In order to feel protected,
To save herself from pain
She made a promise to her heart
To never fall in love again.

Then one day it happened
Her worse fear realized,
Someone looked inside of her
Deep past her bright blue eyes.

They saw the hurt and loneliness
That she had buried deep
Awakening her fragile heart
From its long, protected sleep.

And just as if a dam had burst,
Her heart flooded with emotion
Filling her with warmth and joy,
Great passion, love, devotion.

From that day on she could not bear
To pick back up her stones;
To build the wall around her heart
And dwell inside alone.

She finally came to understand
It is better to have loved and lost,
Than never to have loved at all
For there was quite a cost.

To sacrifice true happiness
For fear of finding pain,
Can leave a life with so much loss
When there is so much to gain.

Now trying hard not to look back,
Holding on to her new start,
Seeking truth, and gentle beauty
Within her fragile heart.
