Rat Care
Cages and Bedding
- The best kind of cage to get for your rat would be a wire cage. Wire openings should be no larger than 1/2 inch X 1 inch. The wire cages are best because they provide great ventilation for your rats. Aquariums should be avoided if at all possible because of poor ventilation, and I may get too hot and sticky in the cage especially during the summer. The smallest aquarium you need for one rat is a 20 gallon.
- Pine and cedar shavings need to be avoided because of the aromatic oils in these chips, which can cause harmful respiratory diseases in your rats. I personally like carefresh bedding and aspen wood chips. I highly recommend those two types of bedding, although other people do use corn cob, and rabbit food.
How many and what sex?
- It is best to get at least 2 rats, so they keep each other company when you are not there with them. Depending on your preferences, you should choose either males- who seem to be a little more calm than females, or females- who seem to be more curious and active.
Feeding and playtime
- You should feed your rats the "lab block" specially formulated for rats and mice, along with fresh fruits and vegetables. Many other foods may be offered. My rats do like sunflower seeds and dog food/biscuits.
- You should provide your rats with toys to play with. Some pet stores do carry rat toys, or you can purchase cat and ferret toys for them. Also, you should provide them with a hammock and a box to hide and sleep in.
