He stared at her, wistfully. He wanted to talk to her, like he normally would have done. But she was at the park with someone else, one of the friends she had ditched him for. They were playing a friendly game of basketball, just like he used to do with her. They used to be friends, good friends. Used to be. They had known each other since secand grade. But she had changed. The sky began to turn grey and it got colder. He closed his eyes, remembering...

They always hung out, they were inseperable. They never kept anything from each other. He loved her like a sister. They always shared their problems with each other...
" What's wrong?", he asked.
" It's my stupid sister!," she replied angrily, " I'm sick of her always telling me what to do and I'm sick of this high-and-mighty attitude!"
" Man, I'm sorry. I wish I knew what to say," he said sympathetically, " Is there anything I can do to help?"
" Just what you've always done," she replied, " Listening to me is enough."
" Just remember I'll always be your friend."
" I'll always be yours, too."
" Promise?"
" Promise."
*****************************************************************************
When you have no light to guide you
And no one to walk to walk beside you
I will come to you
Oh I will come to you
When the night is dark and stormy
You won't have to reach out for me
I will come to you
Oh I will come to you

She was just as sympathetic to his problems...
" Another fight with your dad?," she asked him.
" Another fight with my dad," he sighed, " This time he started bitching because he didn't like the way I like my hair long."
" That's it? He sure is acting like an idiot," she said.
" I know."
" Just so you know, I'm always here when you need to talk. Even if it's the middle of the nightm if you're upset, I want you to call me. All right?"
" All right. Thanks. I don't know what I would do if I lost a friend in you."
" We promised to always be friends and to be there for each other, right?"...
" Right."

Sometimes when all your dreams may have seen better days
And you don't know how or why, but you've lost your way
Have no fear when your tears are fallin'
I will hear your spirit callin'
And I swear I'll be there come what may
*****************************************************************************
But things change...
" Yeah, what? I'm studying for a test," she curtly informed him.
" I'm sorry, it's just that me and my dad had another fight," he said apologetically.
She sighed. " What happened this time?"
He was slightly taken aback by her tone. " Well, it's just that he agreed to do some stuff tonight and then he told me that he had to work. It just grew into a big arguement from there."
" That's all you're upset about?"
" Well, yeah."
" Well, if he has to work, he has to work."
" He always has to work, though. That's just it. He promised."
" Look, I have to go."
" Kay. Bye"
*****************************************************************************
We all need somebody we can turn to
Someone who'll always understand
So if you feel that your soul is dyin'
And you need the strength to keep tryin'
I'll reach out and take your hand

Things went on like that and got worse...
" Where were you? I waited for an hour at the mall, but you never showed," he asked her.
" I'm sorry. My mom told me at the last minute that I had to do some things and wouldn't let me go," she told him.
He was silent for a moment.
" Why are you lying to me?," he asked her.
" What are you talking about?"
" I think you know. I saw you leaving the mall with some guy."
" Fine, I met some cute guy, we got to talking and I wanted to hang out with him. What's wrong with that?"
" What's wrong? You lied to me!"
" So? It's not like you haven't been lied to before. I don't see what the big deal is!"
" You didn't answere my question: Why did you lie to me?"
" I gotta go," she said and hung up.
He held the phone in his hand for a minute, stunned.
" What happened?," he whispered, his voice choked with tears, " I thought we'd always be friends."...
*****************************************************************************
I tell you how I feel but you don't care
I say tell me the truth but you don't dare
You say love is a hell you can not bare
And I say give me mine back and then go there for all I care
*****************************************************************************
When the lies and obvious disinterest in the friendship coninued, they stopped talking all together. But he never stopped hurting...
*****************************************************************************
He looked up at the sky. It was nearly dark and it was gonna start raining soon. He cast another look at her, wishing she would look at him, smile at him, anything. But she walked right by him as if he were invisible. He stared after her, hurt filling his eyes.
" I'm still your friend," he whispered," Even if you're not mine. I once told you that I'll always be your friend no matter what. We both agreed to keep that promise. You broke your promise, but I won't break mine. I'll always be there for you."
Taylor stuffed his hands in his pockets and started to head home. He was gratefull that he still had his brothers. They were his best friends too. As he walked, it began to rain, hard. Good. It would hide the tears that streamed silently.
