Port Hedland....Western Australia

My family lived in the Port Hedland area for a total of (just over) 8 years, and the place really does get into your blood after a while, it's somewhere which we will always have fond memories, especially of the people that we met there, and particually the lifelong friends that we made.

We first moved to Goldsworthy in 1990, and soon learnt that the town was to close down, and the people moved into Port Hedland, which was a bit of a relief, after having to travel over 100 Kilometres to do the shopping every week! The township of Goldsworthy was a very friendly one, friends were soon made and stories kept forever in our hearts & minds to tell the Grandkids one day!

After moving into Port Hedland, we soon learnt to adapt to the way of living, it's a very laid back lifestyle in the North West, and favours are done for North West Currency (a slab of beer).

Port Hedland is situated approximately 1,800km (1,118 miles)NW of Perth, and 610 km South of Broome. Hedland is West Australia's fastest growing town, with the population almost doubling over the past 3 years. It has now reached around 20,000. The main employer for the town is B.H.P. and is at the moment building a Hot Briquette Plant just outside of town.

The temperatures in the area are VERY HOT!!! Sometimes reaching 49 degrees celsius, but most houses and all shopping centres have airconditioning, not to mention MOST of the cars.....
Travelling in the area can be very dangerous at times, and water must be carried, even in winter, due to the temperatures and the distances between towns!
