This episode starts out with the Gauls {including Verkinex and Mendila}. Mendila and all some of the villagers head for the hills while Verkinex and some warriors stay to fight Krassus and his army. The battle begins. Verkinex is caught by Caesar. Suddenly, Xena comes and grabs Krassus with her whip. She pulls him after her on Argo. Just outside of the village she meets Gabrielle. They are going to use Krassus as a pawn. On the ship Xena takes away Krassus' imperial ring. She is going to show it to Caesar so that he knows that she has Krassus. In the palace Caesar and Pompii the Magnus are arguing. Pompii thinks that Krassus is dead and wants his aquaduct. A civil was is threatened . But, Pompii says that Caesar's army of townspeople is no match for the hardened army of Pompii the Magnus. Caesar says fine, take your aquaduct. A palace guard enters, saying that someone is here to see him{Caesar), that actually they could not keep her out. But, that she is unarmed. Pompii says "She?" Xena enters the scene with Gabrielle behind her. Xena has the ring and says that she wants to trade for Verkinex. Gabrielle stays at the palace while Caesar goes to see that Xena hasn't killed Krassus. On the ship Caesar says to Krassus he is not sure about him because he was "captured and chained by a woman I captured and chained, oh I don't know." Caesar says to Krassus that he will not do anything tonight because he has a little party to show off Verkinex. He wants Xena to come. Xena says "Whatever it takes." Then she storms of up the stairs. Caesar turns to Krassus and says "divide and conquer, her friend is the key". On land Xena is explaining the plan to Gabrielle. Gabrielle must swith Krassus for Verkinex because Caesar won't go through with the trade. By the time Caesar realizes it's Verkinex it will be too late. Gabrielle says she can't send a man to his death. Xena says Krassus stopped being a man a long time ago. He crusified over 100 men, women and children in Gardinas. Gabrielle suspects that Xena is going to assinate Caesar. Xena says that this is no time to have a crisis of faith. Xena rides off. At the palace party Xena accompinies Caesar. When Caesar is off to talk to someone Pompii comes up to Xena. P: "Why do they call you the warrior princess?" X: "Because Caesar was taken." P: "I like you." X: "Don't I'm not a likeable person." P: "So am I. But even common enemies can make friends over night." He goes on to explain that not everyone is loyal to Caesar. Everyone is excited when the guards bring Verkinex out. On the ship Krassus is trying to convince Gabrielle that he is not a bad person. Then it shows the jail. Xena says to Verkinex that she is Xena, she is working to get him out. She said that Mendala sent her. And that the children are safe and they want their father home. Xena presses a piece of clay onto the guards key. Back on the ship Gabrielle has fallen asleep and Krassus manages to get the rope on around his hands untied with a burning candle. He heads up the stairs. He soon comes crashing down because Xena is there. Gabrielle wakes up. Xena puts the pinch on him and they tie him up again. Xena gives Gab a key that she had made on Rome. Xena takes the pinch off. Xena explains that Verkinex is more of a prize than she thought and that when Caesar realizes that it is Krassus it won't matter and he will die. Xena says she is sorry. The next day Gabrielle is leading Krassus to a well. They are heading for room. She puts a powder in his water. Before he gets the water Krassas says he thought she was different but know she is going to let him die at Verkinex's execution. Gabrielle says she will give him his imperial ring which identifies him all over Rome. The powder in the water Krassus drinks makes him appear drunk when they are in the market. Gabrielle pretends to be drunk. When they are in the cell across from Verkinex Gabrielle says she is working with Xena. In Caesar's room he is at his desk. In on the window sill pops Xena, with the daggar Pompii gave her, in her mouth. She slowly creeps up. Caesar says hello Xena and His guards grab her. Xena asks how did he know. Caesar: "You have one obsession Xena, that's me." He says that because of that somewhere there is an irritating little blonde about to follow a plan that no longer exists. Xena is thrown in a cell with Verkinex. Julius says Xena will die in combat with gladiators. He says Verkinex will also die. Gabrielle {who is in the cell across from Xena} Say that Krassus is still asleep and throws Xena the key. Xena unlocks the door. Verkinex calls the guard over. Xena knocks him out. Then they switch Krassus with Verkinex and Verkinex puts on the guards clothes. The next day at the collusium Caesar has Xena brought out to battle two gladiators on horses. Xena takes many hits. She is even caught in a net and dragged behind a horse. But of course Xena emerges triumphant. Caesar says he will take care of her later. Verkinex lets Xena out of the cell after the guards take Krassus. Gabrielle did not give him his imperial ring because she know now that what he did at Gardinas is true. In the collusium Caesar sees that it is Krassus. But, he is killed anyway. Back on the ship Xena apologizes for the position she put Gab in.
