Camp Songs

Here's some FABULOUS Lesbian and Gay songs, great for all those Queer Choirs out there.

Some of my best friends are Straight

Try not to laugh at the clothes that they wear
Didn't mother teach you that it's not polite to stare
Don't make a scene when you see them arm in arm
It's best to just act casual as if you're not alarmed
Just look the other way if they should dare to show affection
And hope to god that they use condoms for their own protection.

Just try, try, try to open up your heart
This worl is big enough for some of us
To play a different part
It's not fair to persecute them for a sumple twist of fate
Some of my best friends are straight.

Try not to wince at their backyard barbecues
Be tactful when you tell them
that their socks don't match their shoes
And when they drive by in their souped-up automodbiles
Dont shout "You look ridiculous up there on those big wheels!"
Though the lifestyle they have chosen seema a bit outrageous
Take comfort in the fact that their conditions not contagious.

Just try, try try....

Although at times their preference makes them hard to tolerate
Some of my best friends are straight
We've got to understand they cannot help themselves
And if it disturbs you,
perhaps you have those tendecies yourself!!

Try not to gawk when you see them at the mall
Don't freak out at the gym if one should
share your shower stall
Try not to smirk at the hairdos that they sport
Though at times you'd like to haul them off to fashion court
And if in fact you find yourself compelled to intervene
Just gently recomment they find a barber whose a queen

Just try, try, try to open up your heart
This world is big enough for some of us
To play a different part
Although they have a tendency to overpopulate
Some of my best friends are straight
Now I might not want my sister to take one on a date
But some of my best friends are
One of your best friends could be
Even someone right beside you could be straight.

I am What I am
from La Cage Aux Folles

I am what I am
I don't need praise,
I don't need pity,
I bang my own drum
Some call it noise,
I call it pretty.
And so what if I love
each bauble and each bangle,
Why not try to see things
from a different angle?
Your life is a sham
'Till you can shout out,
"I am what I am!"

I am what I am
And what I am
Needs no excuses.
I deal my own deck,
Sometimes the ace
Sometimes the duces.
And there's no return
and no deposit,
So it's time to
open up your closet!
Life's not worth a damn,
'Till you can say, "Hey, world,
I am what I am!"

Glory Glory

Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the queers
Homophobes have trampled on our rights
They`ve done so out of fear
We have loosed our rising anger
and now it`s plainly clear
That gays are marching on

Chorus:
Glory, glory I`m a lesbian
Glory, glory I`m a gay man
Glory, glory I`m a homosexual
I am truth marching on

In our homes and on street corners
we have been condemned to die
We were murdered in the Holocaust
by Hitler and his lies
AIDS is killing all our people
whom the governmetn denies
But gays are marching on

Chorus

In the beauty of our loving
we have let ourselves be free
We will heal our wounds through justice
for all humanity
We will deny not our freedom or our sexuality
We will keep marching on

Here's a verse for all you non-lesbians out there ...

Ode to a gym teacher

She was a big tough woman
The first to come along
She showed me being female
meant you still could be strong
And though graduation meant
that we had to part
She'll always be a player
on the ballfield of my heart

I wrote her name on my notepad
and the ink got on my dress
And I etched it on my locker
and I carved it on my desk
And I painted big red hearts
with her initials on my books
And I never knew till later
why I got those funny looks...

She was a big tough woman
The first to come along
She showed me being female meant
you still could be strong
And though graduation
meant that we had to part She'll always be a player
on the ballfield of my heart

In gym class while the others
talked of boys that they loved
I'd be thinking of new aches and pains
the teacher had to rub
And while other girls went to the prom
I languished by the phone Calling up and hanging up
if I found out she was home

She was a big tough woman
The first to come along....

I sang her songs by Johnny Mathis
I gave her everything
A new chain for her whistle,
and daisies in the spring
Some suggestive poems for Christmas
by Miss Edna Millay
And a lacy lacy lacy card
for Valentine's Day
(Unsigned of course)

She was a big tough woman
The first to come along...

(Here comes the moral of the song...)

So you just go to any gym class
And you'll be sure to see
One girl who sticks to Teacher
like a leaf sticks to a tree
One girl who runs the errands
and who chases all the balls
One girl who may grow up to be
the *gayest* of all...

She was a big strong woman
The first to come along
To show me being female meant
you still could be strong
And though graduation meant
that we had to part
YOU'LL always be a player
on the ballfield of my heart!
