David Thames' Story
While hunting with my dad in Copiah county, Mississippi one evening
during the 97-98 season, I had a four-wheeler accident, and tore the
ligaments off of the top of my foot. Even though I was injured, I
wanted to go hunting. My dad was reluctant, but finally let me go. We
decided to go to a place known as the "catch pen." At about 5:15 Dad
saw the first doe. After a couple of minutes, three more does came
out. This time there was a 4-point with them. As I took aim at the
buck, my dad pointed out another deer. As I looked at it I saw that it
had to be either a monster 8-point or or rather large 10-point. Just as
I was about to shoot it went into a gully after a doe. Bye this time
there were 8 other does right in front of us. After a 5 minute wait,
which seemed like an eternity, the deer finally came back out of the
gully. When it got to 60 yards I put the crosshairs on his shoulder and
fired. The deer did not drop all of a sudden, but only ran 5 yards.
When he fell I almost died of excitement. My dad got the four-wheeler
and I walked over to look at it, I saw that it was a monster 8-point.
It has a 20 inch outside spread and 25 1/2 inch main beams. I think
it is a trophy in anyone's book.
