Canzada filed for a widows pension for the service of Charles during the Civil War and it was approved on 25 Sept. 1899. In the application Canzada doesn't seem to be sure of the date of her marriage to Charles, she writes it as 20 Mar. 1854 or 1855. She filed this application in Angelina Co. on 4 Jul. 1899 and states that she had only been living in this county for 2 weeks and her age is 63. She says she is not able to engage in any occupation and that her health is bad. She gives the date of death for Charles as 11 Aug. 1879. She also tells us that Charles served in Co. D of Spates Bttn. and he served for 3 years. Spates Bttn. was part of the 11 TX Vol or 21 TX inf. Witnesses to her application were W. B. Free and John N. Coward.

I have not been able to find Charles Flowers in the 1860 census. He should have been married to Canzada with at least one child - M. G. b. 1857. Here's the mystery though - Canzada is enumerated with her father Wm. A. Brackin in the 1860 Hardin Co., TX census and she is not listed as Flowers but Brackin and there are none of her children with her. Where were Charles and Major? Canzady is living with her son, M. G. Flowers, in the 1900 census.

Letter from B. F. Fowers to his sister Elizabeth on 31 Oct. 1906:
Loughman, FL
Dear Sister,
With much plesure I seat myself to write you a few lines in reply to yours of Oct. 14th which came safe to hand and found us as well as common. Well sister when you and mother left Alabama the rest of us was in a half mile. Father moved about 2 days before mother left. You was 2 years old when you left Alabama and I have toated you in my arms lots of times. You said you could not make out Eli Post office. It is Westville, Fla. Eli had the Lagrip and it put out one of his eyes. He lives in West Fla and I live in south Fla. I can't tell you how far apart we live though a long ways. The last I heard of Ervin his post office was Saratoga Texas and Issabell left the same year you did. She had two girls the youngest one died in Alabama. They moved to Missippi but I do not know their post office. Issabell has been dead upwards of 40 years. She married John Renfro. Me and Eli has been in Florida 35 years. You wanted to know how we liked Fla. I can't say how Eli likes it but I like it better than any other country I was ever in. I have been in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, close to the line of Mississippi and Fla is the best poor mans country I ever was in. Sister are you living with your last husband. If you are I have nothing to say but if you are not take your children and come to Fla. Ancer this question at onsed. Jeff and Frances are both married. They both married Caraways. Jeff has got two girls and Francis has got 2 boys living. I do not know her post office but Jeffs post office is Ozark Ala RFD No. 2. Jacob Warr and Wash Warr died in Texas the last I heard from Alfred he lived in Alabama and was snake bit. Henry Warr moved to Texas and I haven't heard from him since. Well sister we have 160 acres of land here and some of it is poor and some of it is as good as there is any where in the world. The good land I believe will make $500 per acre in one year planted in the right kind of stuff properly cultivated. Theough we are getting old and not able to work much. If we could work like young folks we could make a fortune. And we have about 50 orange trees and half of them bearing. So you see we have fruit to eat and to sell. A person can sell any and everything they can raise. Though we do not raise cotton in this country. Well sister we raise our meat although the bear are pretty bad they catch lots of hogs but we kill a black bear now and then we not have extra cold weather. It was not cold enough to kill sweet potatoes vines on up land. I guess it gets pretty cold up there. Well I guess everything is cheap up there and I guess wages are small. Everything is high here meat 13 cents, flour $5 per bl., corn $1.60 per sack and so on but the wages are high.
Well sister I will close for this time hoping you are in the best of health and by saying write soon I am your brother as ever.
B. F. Flowers
