Man-of-war Fish

A small fish found in many tropical seas. It is common in the Gulf of Mexico. The fish is about three inches long. It has mottled or banded markings and large, black ventral (abdominal) fins. When in danger, the man-of-war fish commonly darts among the stinging tentacles of the Portuguese Man-of-war, which kill other fish on contact.

The man-of-war fish is Nomeus gronovii of the butterfish family, Stromateidae.
