chapter 4

the next morning, laura woke up thinking she was in her bed in new york city. she was reminded that she wasn't when she rolled over and saw the painted green room. sighing, she remembered the little episode that had happened last night with daniel. she didn't think he'd be the kind of person who judged one on their religion. she'd gotten enough of that racist crap in high school.
she swung her feet over the side of the bed and looked at the closed bathroom door. she hadn't taken a shower since before her long plane flight. gingerly knocking on the door, she pushed it open. it was empty. she grabbed some clothes, and went in.

daniel had waited until the last possible minute to go upstairs and get laura. after a minute of waiting after he knocked, laura came out and smiled shyly at him.
" hey," she said. he quickly returned her greeting, then flew down the stairs to his jeep. as her watched her get in, he looked at her clothes. she was dressed in a black coal chamber t-shirt, and gray pants. she didn't look like a witch. when he thought of witches, he thought of mean, ugly old ladies why stole ruby slippers. not regular people.
" what?" laura said softly, her head tilted in confusion. he realized her was still staring at her.
" nothing." he started the jeep and pulled out of the driveway fast, almost hitting his mailbox.
" are you ok?"
" yes! i'm fine." he snapped at her, then regretted it when her smile dropped. " i'm sorry." he said.
" yeh...it's ok." she said with a careless wave of her hand. she turned and looked out the window.
a little while later, they pulled into the small parking lot of the restaurant they were eating at. wordlessly, they got out and went inside.

" what's up with them?" cassy whispered to alex, nudging him in the ribs.
" what do you mean?"
" they're not even looking at each other."
" so?"
" so? didn't you think after they spent a night in the same house alone with each other, they'd be a bit more....holding hands, maybe?"
" cassy, don't push them."
" i'm not! i just.....want them to be happy."
" they will if you just -"
" cassy! alex! let's eat!" ben called from across the room. rolling his eyes, he dragged cassy across they lobby and took their seats.

sam sighed for the millionth time and peered out into the airplane aisle in impatience. she couldn't wait to land and see all her friends. she sighed again, watching they tall lanky guy who was walking down the aisle drop into his seat.
hmmm, she thought, he looks so familiar. wouldn't that be so weird if he was that guy i went out with.....he turned and looked at her.
oh. my. god. she thought, turning away. i knew he looked familiar!
