Aaron House
The Aaron Knights have been a part of Aaron, errr, Graceland College since
October 1962. The name rEFers to the Book of Mormon's Aaronic priesthood.
The name was suggested by Neil Francis and was selected by house members
during a contest. Aaron House was located in Herald Hall during its initial
year under Lord James Warnock. Since the first year, the house mascot has
been the Knight, which was chosen for its connotations of courage and strength.
The initial colors were black (symbolizing chivalry), white (symbolizing purity),
and red (symbolizing courage and bravery).
After several years at various locations, Aaron moved to the 4th floor of
Graybill in the fall of 1976. Later during that school year, college
administrators decided to permanently leave all men's house at their current
floors. In the fall of 1997, Aaron relocated to the first 2 floors of
Gunsolley Hall, trading sites with Stewart Manor. This move was supposedly
made in part due to the feeling that Aaron's strong sense of identity would
have the best chance of unifying a 2-floor house.
The familiar red Aaron jacket, featuring the word "Aaron" in large, cursive
white lettering on the back, has remained essentially unchanged since its
introduction in 1977-78. Sir Brian Carr designed the knight, armor, and
shield for the jacket's front logo. Solah copied tha jacket's design when
it became Aaron's sister house the following year.
In 1979, Aaron House introduced its tradition of a rope "climb" across the
campus ground from Graybill (now, Gunsolley "GRR!!") Hall to the football
field. Outfitted in traditional climbing gear, the knights scuffle over the
ground with a rope and time their arrival for halftime of the football game.
We conclude this event by attempting to form a human pyramid on the field.
Our pyramid seems to be one of the biggest threats to the Graceland
Community, according to Tom Powell, but Cheville House and others used to
respond by trying to knock down the pyramid. Cheville will always be known
for trying to knock down our pyramid at Homecoming, which to them should
be a special feeling.
The activity actually originated during the 1979 winter term as the idea of
Tiona House member John Caywood. That January, he and Sir John Kenworthy of
Aaron decided to relieve their boredom by copying a stunt that they had seen
on Monty Python. The two students invited members of their houses to
participate, but it was so cold that morning they were the only two who
showed up. The two scaled the ground by the MSC and concluded the EFfort
at Tess Morgan Hall. As they neared the women's dormitory. John Caywood
tumbled backwards to enact a momentary "fall" and Sir Kenworthy "caught" him
behind for the rescue. The Knights of Aaron House decided to adopt the idea
at the following homecoming under the organization of Sir George Jones and
Sir Paul Shupe.
Aaron is the first house that established an endowed scholarship fund. The
idea began during the 1987-88 school year under Lord(HP) Charles Wilmot.
Two years later, house members wrote and phoned their alumknights to raise
funds for scholarships that are awarded to current Aaron Knights.
Aaron has and continues to sponsor a child. His name is Mark Caliwag and
he is from the Phillipines.
Steak Fry, PJ formal and Knights Night Out are once again second to none.
Painting the bell red and black is still our daily trophy on campus, as the
all familiar red and black bell is back in place.
Someday, we'll paint Closson Gym.
