The Lamplighter
My tea is nearly ready and the sun has left the sky.
Now Tom would be a driver and Maria go to sea,
For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door, Robert Lewis Stevenson |
The Children's Hour
Between the dark and the daylight,
I hear in the chamber above me
From my study I see in the lamplight,
A whisper, and then a silence:
A sudden rush from the stairway,
They climb up into my turret
They almost devour me with kisses,
Do you think, O blue-eyed banditti,
I have you fast in my fortress,
And there will I keep you forever, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |
But I couldn't remember six times nine, and I didn't know what to do, Till sister told me to play with my doll, and not to bother my head. If you call her 'Fifty-four' for a while, you'll learn it by heart," she said. So I took my favorite, Mary Ann (though I thought 'twas a dreadful shame To give such a perfectly lovely child such a perfectly horrid name), And I called her my dear little "Fifty-four" a hundred times, till I knew The answer of six times nine as well as the answer of two times two. Next day Elizabeth Wigglesworth, who always acts so proud, Said, "Six times nine is fifty-two," and I nearly laughed aloud! But I wished I hadn't when teacher said, "Now, Dorothy, tell if you can." For I thought of my doll and-sakes alive! -— I answered, "Mary Ann!" By Anna Maria Pratt

"Come, My Little Children, Here Are..."
Come, my little children, here are songs for you;
Mark the note that rises, mark the notes that fall, Robert Lewis Stevenson |
Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it,
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.
Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
And look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.
All of us under its spell,
We know that it's probably magic...
Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it;
It's something that I'm s'posed to be,
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.
Laa, da daa dee da daa daa,
La laa la la laa dee daa doo...
