Season of Fools VII: The Lovers

THE LOVERS -- rather than signifying sex or romance, the Lovers card
signifies
that a choice must be made. In the traditional Lovers card the hero has a
temptress on one side, and a virgin on the other. Only the innocence of the
virgin, the true feminine, can lead the hero to discover her individuality
and wholeness.

"So, Spike, hear voices often?" Buffy teased as she tossed a stake from hand
to hand while strolling through the cemetery. She'd sobbed into Spike's chest
for several minutes, and he could tell she was now up to par. In regards
to her comment, he shot her a withering look. "Geez, I'm just doing the
small talk thing," she defended. Spike sighed and shrugged.

"Slayer, I said it before--"

"Right. Not my friend. Never were and never will be." He caught sight of
a slight blush creeping up her neck at some memory dug up by her comment.

"You're blushing, pet," he observed.

"Thank you, Captain of the Obvious. I hadn't noticed," she snapped. Sudden
realization dawned on Spike, and he grinned evilly.

"'You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other 'til it makes
ya quiver, but you'll never be friends,'" he teased; she shot him a look
that rivaled his own previous one. "Right, then. No shagging." He looked
up sharply. "Can we settle for fighting?" he asked as he grabbed her shirt
and pulled her out of the way of the charging vampire. The vamp missed the
pair as Buffy impacted with Spike, and they both ended up sprawled on the
ground. He glanced up at her with sudden heat in his eyes, and her own
eyes widened in surprise when she felt his arousal pressing against her
thigh that was situated between his legs. "Precarious situation, Slayer,"
he whispered. She growled in frustration and jumped to her feet.

"I don't get you," she muttered before she spun around and kicked the
legs out from under the vampire still bent on attacking her. With one
smooth movement, she pulled a stake out of her sleeve to replace the
one that had been lost when they fell, plunged it into the vampire's
heart, and turned to face Spike again with anger in her eyes. "One
minute you say we aren't friends and the next you're making innuendo
all over the place."

Spike shrugged, "I'm complex."

"I hate you!"

"Mutual," he growled. They glared at each other until the sound of
insane giggling reached their ears. They turned as one and came
face to face with Drusilla. The shiny fabric of her new gown glowed
black under the moonlight as she stepped back from them all the while
still giggling.

"I found you, my Spike!" Dru exclaimed, clapping her hands together.
Spike rolled his eyes heavenward and cursed silently.

"Well, psycho 'ho is back," Buffy commented, smirking at Dru. The
female vampire stopped her excited clapping and stared at Buffy.
The two circled each other, searching for a weakness; Drusilla
suddenly smiled.

"The moon told me about you," she stated, leaning close to Buffy.
"You tried to kill her," she whispered. The Slayer's eyes widened,
and she reeled back and hit Dru in the mouth with a closed fist.

"You have no idea what happened," Buffy ground out, causing Spike
to study her intently. The insane vampire giggled again.

"You killed her," she whispered, suddenly lifting a hand and
caressing Buffy's hair. "And now you've become her!" Dru laughed
and stepped away, manuvering herself until Spike was between her
and Buffy. "Come to me, Spike?" She held out a hand. "Come to
princess?" Spike looked from Dru to Buffy and back again, torn
in his decision. His voice made the choice for him.

<Go to her and die,> The voice repeated over and over. Spike
sighed heavily and took his place beside Buffy, crossing his
arms, and knew instinctively that battle lines were being drawn.
The vampiress just smiled dreamily.

"Soon, my Spike. Soon, you'll come to princess. Soon, you'll
scream for the moon," she whispered and strode out of the
cemetery. Silence hung over the pair for several seconds.

"No, that wasn't tense," Buffy finally commented.
