Gabrielle wants to lose her painful memories. She sees herself when Hope was dead and she was about to drink poison. Suddenly, just as she was about to put the spout to her lips it she finds herself beside a tree. She says she can’t "do it". Joxer doesn't know what she is talking about. She explains that she cannot eat nor sleep. She starts to leave telling Joxer to stay there. He reminds her that Xena says she would they the temple of Mnemosynee.She walks off telling him to wait. He believes he has waited long enough {not even one minute} and follows her. Gabrielle arrives at the temple of Mnemosyne. A girl comes out who cannot remember anything. Gabby decides to go in. When Gabrielle enters the temple the priestess has her memories in a bowl. She knows what gabby is here for,and explain that when the bowl is empty,so goes her memory. The priestess helps Gabrielle prepare for her journey to find the answers. During all of this Joxer is trying to get into the temple but the guards won’t let him. He throws dirt into their faces{only after he falls out of a tree that he climbed to see into the temple}. He enters just as Gabrielle has left on her quest for knowledge through her memories. Joxer takes the shell of Gabrielle out of the temple. This Gabrielle does not know anything. Gabrielle is on her jouney,in a cave.Ares appear He pretends he is there to protect her and when Gabrielle took his powers in the magic scroll incident he grew fond of her. He warns her about the "River of Wailing",and the leaves. Gabrielle enters the river, who would trust Ares? Nothing happens. But, when Gabrielle washes her face the flashbacks start. She sees herself killing that girl in the temple, talking and deciding of Krassus' death She gets out of the water. She is soaked in blood.She reaches an icy place. Ares asks her if she wants to go on.She replies that she wasn’t prepared for the last one but she is ready for this one. When Ares is gone she starts to cross a strip of ice over the water.Gabrielle believes that if the water doesn’t touch her it can’t hurt her. The ice cracks and Gabrielle falls in. The River of Woe shows her flashbacks from the episode with Min Tien in China. It shows her betrayal to Xena. It also shows Min Tien sentencing Xena to execution. When Gabrielle gets out of the icy water she is shivering and says that she cannot go on. Ares starts a fire for Gabrielle. She says that she has the answer. She thought that she would never some to terms with her mistakes, but she did. They show clips of Gabrielle apologizing to Xena in the water prison. Ares says that Gabrielle is smart. Gabrielle goes back into the icy water to go home. The ice starts to surround her but Gabrielle breaks free. She decides not to stay in the iceland for eternity. When Gabrielle comes to the fiery cave she says “I’m here Ares.” Ares asks her if the quest for knowledge is worth all this pain, He reminds her that Xena betrayed her. Gabrielle says yes, it’s worth it , it has to be. She t hen tells Ares about Illusia. And there are some clips. Gabrielle makes it through the burning river. At the end She figures out that Ares is not Ares, but her guilt or whatever. She magically grabs a staff, and in her words {from the Callisto ep} she “beats the stuffing” out of Ares. Gabrielle figures out that she wanted Xena to suffer and be in pain in the China ep. She was jealous because Xena also loved someone else. She does not empty the bowl with her memories. She is going to live with the truth. All throughout this it skips to the woods where Joxer is trying to teach the memory less Gabrielle about herself. But he lies, saying that he did all of these things that Xena did and that he and Gabrielle love each other. He says he wants the old Gabrielle back the one that knocks him around. Suddenly the Gabrielle grabs Joxer {who the empty Gabrielle sometimes called Jerkser}. The real Gab is back. In the end Xena enters the scene, she knew what Gabrielle’s problems where because Gabrielle talks in her sleep. Gabrielle tired to apologize but Xena said it was all right. The reason Xena wanted to meet at Mnemosyme’s temple is do that Gabrielle could find out the truth for herself.
