Kyla awoke one morning with the sun peaking through her curtains across her face. The greeting of the wonderful morning in South Florida reminding her of her new life all on her own. It had begun, her adventure to try and make her one dream come true. Dancing, her life, Her dream of becoming a dance choreographer. Slowly she climbed out of her double bed and wrapped a housecoat about her. She walked into the hall and looked into the living room of the small two bedroom condo that her friend Camille and herself had bought just weeks before. Camille was already eating at the kitchen table and reading the employment adds. “Good Morrow” Kyla greeted her friend as she always did.
“Good Morrow dear friend” Camille greeted her with the same Shakespearean text as she looked up from the paper.
“All is good and It is going to be a beautiful day I see.” Kyla said as she opened the curtains revealing the blue sky and the ocean which stretched out to meet it. Camille stood and joined her friend at the window.
“Blue Horizon.” Camille said as she began to sing the lyrics of the hit country song by Farmers Daughter.
“Oh will you stop with the country already or are you determined to make me go out of my mind. You sang it the whole way here and now you won’t ever let it be” Kyla said her voice was filled with a deep annoyance.
“Don’t have a hissy fit Kyla I am just warming my vocal cords for my demo recording.” Camille laughed as she made her way back to the table and picked up a slice of toast with strawberry jam on it.
“Camille we don’t even have the money to think about that yet. You know that! We barely have enough money to buy food for the rest of the summer let alone record a demo tape.” Kyla said coming over and sitting down in the old tattered and torn brown cotton covered chair.
“Ah but my dear friend Kyla do you forget that I have a savings account with the money to record a thousand demo tapes?” Camille asked her friend referring to her college account.
“Camille your father told you that the money was for Collage and nothing else.” Kyla said looking at her friend with horror that she was even thinking of spending the oh so precious money for college.
“Kyla, I have enrolled in the courses I want I just dropped the writing because I took it in grade 12. Now I have 2 years of Journalism and 3 years of Photography. I still have a lot of money left over.” Camille told her friend, there was a hint of sadness in her voice as she mentioned the dropping of her long time love, writing. She was so very talented at writing and it hurt for her not to take it.
“But Camille writing is your life how can you just drop it for singing? You don’t honestly think that you can become a writer without any college on the subject do you?” Kyla stated. Kyla was always the more reasonable of the two but Camille was the dreamer who put dreams into action. Camille didn’t think reasonably she dreamed and lived life on edge. She had never been a good student and didn’t let it get to her when she failed or so it seemed. No one ever knew of the scars it had left her with. Scars that caused the depression attacks that were another thing no one knew about. Camille had secrets and Kyla always wondered what they were. She very rarely let anyone in the few times she had let her best friend in were treasures but there were so many things that Kyla still didn’t know. The secret hurt, the past of her mistakes.
“Kyla, It may sound absurd but nothing you can say will make me change my mind this is something I have to do for me.” Camille informed her friend as she finished her breakfast and cleared the dishes putting them in the dishwasher. Kyla looked at her friend. Camille’s Long auburn curls were messily tide up in a bun with ringlets hugging her face. Her blue eyes peered through her glasses which would soon be replaced with her contacts. Her tall, thin figure moved with the gracefulness of a ballet dancer yet she had never had training. Kyla, herself, was short but thin with blonde hair and ice blue eyes. But the iciness was not the problem for anyone who looked in her eyes anyone could see the kind, and caring part that made up her personality.
“So anyway I am going to go out and apply at the college down the street this morning” Kyla announced as she followed Camille into her bedroom.
“Okay, and I will probably go out and look for a recording studio within my price range. Then I have to pick up some new clothing for school and then I might go for a swim. Hey I have an idea this weekend lets rent a boat and go out for a while on the ocean.” Camille suggested as she looked into her already packed full walk-in closet.
“Don’t you have enough clothing? and we can’t afford to go out on the water in a boat!” Kyla said as she watched Camille pull out outfit after outfit and through them on her bed.
“Kyla I am clearing out my closet of things I will not need. I need to get the new summer fashions beside half of these things will be too warm to wear!” Camille said as she pulled out a red knitted sweater.
Kyla rolled her eyes as she walked out of Camille’s room and into her room where she sat on her bed and looked around. Her room was all green with pine wood furniture that her father had bought for her. It somewhat resembled Camille’s room before when they lived in Vancouver. Now Camille had gone nuts and decorated it all in animal prints. But with Camille’s’ sense of style she always made everything look wonderful.
After a shower, Kyla got dressed and ran out the door to get down to the college and inrole in next years classes hoping that they would have a class on teaching dance for both modern and ballet.
