"Nobody really likes Hanson."
These words were spoken to me recently by my sister, a very intelligent and beautiful 21-year-old whose musical tastes run from Bush to Tori Amos. In the same conversation, she admitted to liking the Backstreet Boys, and Ricky Martin. When I told her about my prom, and how they hadn't played Hanson, she kind of laughed and said, "Nobody really likes Hanson."

I guess that makes me nobody.

It makes me sad to know that my older sister, whom I admire very much, subscribes to a feeling which very often causes me to lose respect for the person expressing it. I'm quite aware that "nobody really likes Hanson." I'm also aware that most people who hold this opinion have heard a total of ONE song, and have only the memory of three very young, longhaired, blond, innocent looking boys whom 10 year olds would scream at, and who insist that despite ample evidence otherwise, they can't play music very well.

The driving force behind active anti-Hansonism is a combination of ignorance, jealousy (oh, be honest), and an inherent unwillingness to accept that which is different.

Sure, Hanson's different. They started writing music when most other kids were trying to master reading. It is, most likely, this obvious and highly extraordinary genius which sparks anti-Hanson sentiment. People are afraid of the power held by such young musicians, writing such emotion-grabbing, raw, simple, beautiful, wonderful music. They would rather make fun of what they don't understand than let it be and risk being left out when other people do understand it. This is basic high-school mentality. It's also wrong. (ps: to any and all anti Hansonites reading this:

LEAVE THEM, AND US, ALONE!!!
(and by the way, get off my site.)

I'm all for opinion. I don't particularly like Jewel, if you want my opinion. In my opinion, the BSB, N'sync, Five and all the resurrected New Kids are more about selling their looks than making good, creative music. This means I don't have as much respect for them, although their music isn't THAT bad. This does NOT mean that I go around saying, "Eewww, you like (fill in the blank)? Nobody really likes them, they suck, they are gay...." YADA YADA YADA. When someone shares an opinion, replying like that which is shown above is shallow. Not to mention small-minded. Ya think you could make up your OWN mind? Bottom line is, I don't CARE if nobody likes them. I do. ( "I" as in me and myself, not you). I like Hanson a whole lot. So there. Nobody has spoken.
