"The Last Shift"
What's that familiar trickle
Running down my lip?
But look- the time on the scoreboard!
The seconds like hungry dogs,
Eating away our hopes
Of championship glory!
Not over yet-
Is it blood that my tongue
Unwillingly tastes?
I love the pain, hungrier it makes me
Adrenaline pumping-
Opponents swarm the ice like bees,
Time is wearing thin, One final chance
For glory, it is…
My last shift!
"Hero for a Day"
Sitting in the locker room, anticipating the game
Lace up my skates and light the inside flame
My coach comes in with a typical pre-game speech
"If you work your hardest, nothing is out of reach"
I hear the crowd cheering as the music did blare
Step onto the ice, ignoring the opponents glare
Warm up the legs, skate a few laps
Clear up the mind, no time for mishaps
Coach gives us 1 more talk, "Stay outta the sin bin"
The ref signals the face-off, let the game begin
We line up at our spots, feel the blood boil
Already I'm sweating, face dripping with oil
With a flick of the wrist, the puck did drop
The contest begins to see who comes on top
The first period went smooth, a rough check here and
there
Of course, that was enough to bring the fans out of
their chair
Soon the mood was swinging our way
Yet we were caught and our game slipped away
An odd man rush, I was left all alone
They scored a quick goal and changed the game tone
1-0 the first period ended, we were in the dumps
The coach flipped, "How are we losing to these chumps?!"
We sat in depression, stared in disbelief
Was there anything that could take away our grief?
The second period began physically and rough
A sheer battle of the strong and tough
A physical game was our team's style
Gaining the upperhand, a goal wouldn't take awhile
Soon enough, after five minutes had past
My buddy fired a goal and it was quite a blast
We celebrated as the crowd did erupt
Momentum shifted yet the opposition still tried to
corrupt
Throughout the second, neither team would bend
It remained tied and uneventful until the end
What started as a scuffle, ended as a brawl
The refs did nothing, too many penalties to call
Fists and knuckles flying all over the place
Very few left the ice without blood on their face
Speechless, coach was, there was nothing to say
We had embarrassed him in a disgraceful way
One period left to go, tied, we had to score
Yet we knew this wouldn't be an easy chore
Our equipment was sweaty, moist and damp
The winner would come to whoever lit the lamp
Tired and aching, both teams struggled
Intensity persisted as possession juggled
Two minutes left, I was cycling underneath
When up came a stick and out came my teeth!
A surging pain shot through my gums as I rushed to the <
bench
I covered my mouth with a rag, but caught the blood<<
stench
The culprit skated by; my teeth still stuck to his stick
Burning inside, the recovery had to be quick
Still a little shaky and still not swift
I hopped on the ice for my last shift
One minute left; the puck deep in our zone
A mad man, I made my anger known
Battling in the corner, everyone I tried to deck
What remained in our zone resembled a train wreck
30 seconds approaching, I rushed the puck
No one could stop me; I was a speeding truck
Weaving through the team, I skated through neutral ice
Could I beat the goalie; I was rolling the dice
Ten seconds left, just the goalie and I
I pulled a finesse move, it was do or die
The goalie went left, I went right
What followed was the most beautiful sight
Into the net the puck did soar
Then came an enormous roar
Skating back to my celebrating team
I'm sure my toothless smile did gleam
Losing the teeth was a small price to pay
For being on top of the world for a day
