School Dresses

The first dancing dress a girl will receive is her school's dress. A school dress is the dress that all of the girls and women wear in competition. Sometimes there in a beginner dress, an adult dress, and a school dress. A beginner dress usually less detailed, and also less expensive, than a school dress. Our beginner dress is black with a kick pleat, lace collar, 2 small, embroidered swans, and a yellow satin cape and is partially lined with yellow satin. It costs $75. The adult dress is the same as the beginner dress, but it does not have a lace collar. The adult dress also costs $75. A full school dress is usually very detailed and very pretty. The full dress for my school is black with a hand-made lace collar, and inverted pleat in front, 4 large embroidered swans, 7 small, embroidered swans, a yellow satin cape, and it is fully lined in green satin. The full school dress costs $280.

Solo Dresses

Solo Dresses are the next dress a girl will receive in Irish Dancing. Dancers who are prizewinner level and up wear these dresses. Solo dresses are very beautiful, but also very expensive. They are usually made out of velvet and they have lots of embroidery on them. Solo dresses can be bout used or pre-designed, or an Irish dancer can design her own. Solo dresses can be very traditional or very modern. The more tradition dresses, in my opinion, have lace collars and have no metallic fabric on them. The more modern dresses, I think, have mandarin collars, some metallic fabric, and some even have lace sleeves. Both styles are very pretty. Also, when a girl wears a solo dress, she can also wear a tiara. Irish dancing tiaras are really pretty, and can match your solo dress.

Boys' Costumes

When most boys start dancing they wear a nice shirt and slacks to dance in. At my school the boys wear black shirts and pants. Many boys also choose to wear kilts. If a boy wears a kilt, he also wears a blazer or sports coat, with a tie. I don't know that much about boys' costumes ( probably because I don't have to wear them...) but I'm working on it.
