When Elvis Presley graduated from L.C. Humes High School in 1953 during the days of segregated schools, the stately red brick building was operated by the city district to serve white students in a growing area of north Memphis. The school still operates today and is known as Humes Preparatory Academy Middle, a mostly black, state-run charter school serving a community with a shrinking population of school-age children. This week, leaders of Tennessee’s Achievement School District are expected to announce whether the historic school will remain open. Last year the state-run school turnaround district invited other eligible charter networks to apply to step in. But only one, Memphis-based Frayser Community Schools, threw its hat in the ring. Among Frayser’s plans for Humes: a renewed focus on music. A new music and media center is being built at Humes Middle School, Elvis Presley's Alma Mater. Humes principal Michael Bates says the room will be used to teach the kids about where they live. Bates says, "Well, we plan on using it this school year as a part of our performing arts as well as our history programs, so we can kind of tie in our geographic location to Downtown Memphis and Memphis music." The room will be done in time for back-to-school on August 14th. It will also be an attraction for fans visiting Memphis during Elvis week next month. Elvis Presley Enterprises has partnered with the Memphis City Schools' "Adopt-a-School" program. It has been helping Humes since the 1980's. Been a while. I was sent the following in an e-mail. Hope it is of some help. KINDEST REGARDS, YOUR ELVIS FRIEND, Lee. HUMES HIGH SCHOOL: "No school at Humes as it awaits lead tests... By Aimee Edmondson, edmondson@gomemphis.com January 11, 2003. Humes Middle School will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday while school officials await test results for lead-based paint. School leaders called out inspectors Tuesday to look at mold, but those inspectors were much more concerned about peeling and chipping paint. Preliminary tests Thursday showed some lead content, so Pickering Environmental Consultants Inc. advised Supt. Johnnie B. Watson to cancel classes while waiting for more test results, due back Wednesday. By late Friday, school leaders were unsure whether they'd try to find space at nearby schools for Humes kids or have them make up the days later. It's not unusual to find lead-based paint in old schools like Humes, built in 1927 with six additions since. And it's all right to have that paint if it's in good condition - not chipping, peeling and cracking. That's when the lead can break into dust and build up in the body, damaging the brain, kidneys and nervous system. Inspectors are also testing for mold spore counts and types but say mold had nothing to do with the closing. "We can't make a mountain out of a molehill," said Michael Donohoe, Pickering's environmental services director. Mold has been the subject of much debate in Memphis as parents called for East High School's closing late last year due to mold concentrations, fearing their kids were in danger. But environmental experts, including those from Pickering, said the fear was unnecessary, that only a small fraction of the population is allergic to mold. East underwent a massive cleanup over the winter break, and the school district encouraged administrators at other schools to call with any mold-related concerns. Humes students to be tested February 4, 2003 wmctv.com Students at Humes Middle School will be tested for lead. Humes was closed weeks ago because of higher than acceptable lead levels. Testing will be on Saturdays and will start within a week to 10 days. Letters were sent home to parents today informing them of the decision..." _____________________________________________________________________________ Anna's Elvis: Connected with the King _____________________________________________________________________________ FROM: http://www.gomemphis.com/mca/bartlett_appeal/article/0,1426,MCA_15697_2569598,00.html _____________________________________________________________________________ By Stephen D. Price Contact January 15, 2004 When Anna Hamilton looks at the many pictures of Elvis Presley in her Bartlett restaurant, she sees more than just a singing, hip-swinging, smiling entertainer. She sees a man who gave back to his community. She sees the Elvis Presley who graduated from her alma mater, L. C. Humes High School. The school and the man are highlighted throughout Anna's Steak House at 6963 U.S. 70. "There isn't anyone who went to Humes that graduated before 1967 that doesn't have a deep affection for Elvis," said Hamilton, 56, and a 1965 graduate of Humes. "He did so much for the children." Hamilton said Presley would donate money for football and band uniforms and art supplies. The walls of her restaurant are adorned with Elvis photos (some of which have never been printed), his high school diploma and other memorabilia from Humes. "I loved my years at Humes," Hamilton said. "We were small enough to know everybody, but it also gave me a good education. The teachers cared about us, and we cared about them. We were in the poorest section of Shelby County but we never went without." Hamilton met Elvis in 1965 while she worked at the Memphian Theater. Elvis sometimes rented the whole theater for himself and his entourage. After the movie, he walked out into the lobby and spoke with the theatre workers. "Other than my children and grandchildren being born, that was one of the best moments of my life," said Hamilton. One hall in the restaurant is dedicated to community police and firefighters. Last year, Hamilton moved her restaurant from Collierville to Bartlett. "I doubled my size," she said. A divorced mother of two, Hamilton has had her share of jobs to make ends meet, including waiting tables. When the company she was working for laid off people, she decided to start her own restaurant. Using her parents' house for collateral, she got a loan from the bank, developed a business plan and opened Anna's in 1990. Every fourth Friday, Hamilton has a Humes alumni gathering at the restaurant. "It pays the bills and allows me to give back to the community," she said of the restaurant business. - Stephen D.
