The very first song that Jesse ever sang in public was the Hank Williams classic, "I Can't Help It", which was sung on stage at the United Church Hall in Gambo. He was seven years old at the time. Jesse will be quick to tell you of another that struck his heart and that was "I Dreamed About Momma Last Night". Around that time his next door neighbour had passed away at a very young age leaving behind a young family who was very close to Jesse and, hearing the song "I Dreamed About Momma Last Night" is a constant reminder for Jesse. At the age of seven, Jesse joined the church choir and, for five years, sang alongside his sister Daphne, who later sang with him on two of his gospel albums. Jesse comes from a musical family. His two older brothers also recorded a tape and his dad played the accordion in his early years. The family always gathered and listened to singers like Wilf Carter, Hank Snow, Charlie Pride, and many more, but the all-time favourite was Hank Williams, Sr. Jesse spent many hours in his bedroom playing his six-string guitar and listening to Hank singing. As time went on, Jesse continued collecting and listening to Hank's songs, from which he got great enjoyment. Throughout the years, Jesse appeared on many stages, singing mostly the songs of Hank Williams which he had grown to love from his childhood. Today, Jesse is the only Newfoundlander who continues to sing and record the Hank Williams classics. An accomplished musician, he plays the guitar, piano and harmonica. He was, at one time, part of a four-piece band, The Brass Beads. Jesse has a total of five recordings to his credit so far, which are being played and praised on public radio stations all over the world, in countries such as Belgium, England, and many others. Jesse acknowledges that this overseas success is due to the promotional help of his good friend, Michael T. Wall, for which he is very grateful. His last recording was in 2002. Then again, I know Jesse, I know his music and that's what this is all about. What started out as hero worship for a young boy named Jesse Paul has turned into a music career. He is the only Newfoundland singer I know who continues to sing the traditional music of Hank Williams. Today his albums are played around the world, in Canada, the U.S., Australia, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand and many other countries, as well as locally. Meanwhile, he continues to make personal appearances whenever time permits. Although he still sings many of Hank's classics, Jesse is beginning to record and perform original songs in the Hank Williams style. Several of his own compositions can be heard on past albums. Whatever he sings is supported by DJ's and his fans, the most important people in an artist's life, outside of family. "Picture On The Wall" is Jesse's seventh album and was recorded in his home studio. Of the ten songs on the album, seven are carefully chosen Hank Williams covers; two are Jesse Paul originals, including the title cut. The tenth song is "I Remember Hank Williams", written especially for Jesse, by Fay Herridge & Michael T. Wall, Songs 'R' Us Publishing. This song was printed in the Hank Williams Fan Club Newsletter where it generated great interest. A number of Hank fans have already inquired about the release date of the album. Michael and I both have faith in Jesse's musical abilities and we are pleased with his work on our song. We wish him the best of luck and great success with this album. Sincerely, Fay Herridge, Songwriter _____________________________________________________________________________ Reviews _____________________________________________________________________________ Picture On The Wall JESSE PAUL -SWC- Picture On The Wall; CD album has 10 cuts. The added attraction is a song, I Remember Hank Williams written by our Canadian Friend Michael T. Wall & Fay Herridge. Every cut is FANTASTIC!!!!!! .....E.H. King, Country Western Corner, September 2002. I Remember Hank Williams Jesse Paul is a good representative by hank Williams, and his songs impress me a lot, and hear an artist of today, have guts, courage and mind to take up those classic country songs from one of the cornerstones in the pure country music, it's marvelous. I have just one thing to blame Jesse, and it's the "machine drum" as not should have been used, and don't fit into classic country, unless the sound are very very low, and not beat any other of the equipments as are used. Jesse's crying voice style is real good, but often to week to beat the music, so if he would mix his voice, so it feels as he stand more in front of the band, or better sing out more powerfull, and not as now in the middle of the band, then he will be able to catch a lots of the Scandinavian traditional country music lovers, that for sure. Also Jesse will be a natural artist in my shows on the different radio stations as I serve with my shows, welcome Jesse. .....Dann Hansen, Roskilde, Denmark. April 14, 1997. If you believe, even remotely, in the slightest celestial influence of the heavens, there may be no mere coincidence that this fifth child, in a family of eight, would spend most of his singing life immersed in the musical works of Hank Williams. Jesse was born into a family of three other brothers and four sisters, all of whom are blessed with ample musical ability. Each and every sibling is accomplished in at least one musical instrument. His Dad, in his younger years, used to play accordion, while his Mom, despite being the only member without instrumental talent, filled the local church with her beautiful singing every Sunday. Two of Jesse's elder brothers are also recording artists - having released their first album as a singing duo in 1994. Jesse, himself, demonstrated his musical endowment at a very tender age. His interest in the guitar was keen, so much so, that, at the age of seven, he learned all the basic cords from his older brother. About this same age, young Jesse made his first public appearance. His school was having its annual concert in the United Church Hall, and a solo singer was just what the billing needed. That night, and on that stage, young Jesse Paul performed for the first time one of his favourites, ‘I Can't Help It.' Shortly thereafter he, along with his younger sister, Daphne, joined the church choir. And it was there that he went public every Sunday! Playing your brother's guitar can be okay, but only up to a certain point. Fascination has its own way of making fervid learners. Jesse was catching on quickly and realized that he was getting to be quite good with this ‘stringed toy.' The time had come where he could no longer rest content until he had his own. Money wasn't overly easy to come by, so Jesse took on a paper route while still in school. At the age of eleven, he had earned enough from selling THE EVENING TELEGRAM, to buy himself his first and very own flattop ... a Western. Jesse continues to tell that it was about the same time he came under the spell of the guitar, that Hank Williams, the singer, captivated him. Again one of his older brothers would factor-in significantly. This brother had bought one of Hank's albums. What Jesse heard when that needle played had him beguiled. He would borrow (or just outright ‘take') the LP and go to his bedroom. It was there, he ‘dang near' wore THAT vinyl through. The gramophone played, the record spinned, and Hank sang, BUT above it all, (had you been able to stand outside his door), you'd have heard the sound of Jesse's voice and guitar strings. He is quick to tell you that the one song, above all others, that held the number one spot on the billboard of his heart (...and lungs) at that time was, ‘I Dreamed About Mama Last Night.' Jesse's affection for Hank and his music, in particular, never took a back seat to any other genre. Country music, in general, is all he ever listened to and/or played. Such is still true today ... and will be for many tomorrows ahead. Despite the advances and persuasions to hop aboard the local band wagon of what is known in this province as NEWFIE MUSIC, Jesse has remained true to his country core. When asked if there is anyone other than Hank Williams, Jesse has no answer other than from the heart. With a heap of hesitation and a realm of reluctance, he will aversely admit that his top four of OTHERS are Kitty Wells, George Jones, Johnny Cash and Charlie Pride. During the rare times when he lays the guitar aside, you'll find the band of his radio-dial forever tuned to a country station, where Garth, Clint, Randy and Allan are his pick of today's tunesmiths. Mr. Paul's musical versatility also permits him to play the piano and harmonica along with the Yamaha guitar that he now owns. At one time Jesse played in a four-piece band called THE BRASS BEADS. He was the organ player who would get repeated requests to do Hank Williams songs. The applause and subsequent charge he got from doing such numbers as ‘Wedding Bells,' in particular, have left him with ever pleasant memories. Jesse, when not playing at the Royal Canadian Legion, can be found on the stage of a school auditorium singing ‘his bit' for some charity or sharing in the entertainment of the successful election of a favourite local politician. He willingly admits that his requests are long and great to perform at local house and birthday parties. Both his music and employment have taken him all over Newfoundland, as well as into such Canadian provinces as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Hank Williams' songs had etched themselves on every aspect of Jesse's life ... except for one. There was no professional recorded release of his life long dedication to the songs of his mentor. However, this was soon to be realized. In June of 1992, ‘I Remember Hank Williams' was issued. In May of the following year, ‘Crying My Blues Away' hit the scene. April, 1994 saw the release of his third album, ‘Old Country Church.' His mark had been made! Mr. Paul has written some of his own material, two of which have been recorded, ‘I've Been Away Too Long' and ‘Crying My Blues Away.' He tells us that he has others! His plans are to go back into the studio again in February/March and turn out his 4th album.
