Maine's Geology

Maine Geology Pages

The above image of the "Bubbles" at Mt. Dessert Island is from the Maine Geological Survey's website. Maine's geology results from a variety of factors over the past 600 million years. Indeed, Maine lay beneath the ocean at that time. The ocean closed approximately 400 million years ago and melted rock, forming the supercontinent of pangea together with much of the volcanic rock in Maine. Two hundred million years ago Pangea broke apart. North America, Africa and Europe split apart and drifted away from one another, forming the Atlantic Ocean between them. Africa's Northwestern coast had been attached to what is now Maine's coast. Please go on to the above pages to learn more about the fascinating geological history of Maine.
