Hi,isn't this a beautiful time of year outdoors? I love it,here in Louisiana the azaleas are in their prime right now.If you need to prune your azaleas be sure to do so right after they bloom, otherwise if you trim later in the year you may destroy the blooms for next year. Also be sure to keep mulch around the bottom of the plant (pine straw or leaves are very good)to keep moisture on the roots during the summer.Azalea roots are not deep so they need to be protected.I guess I should qualify that statement. They are shallow if you do not have to dig a well established plant up,Ha!Ha! as we had to do ,or I should say my son-n-law did it for me. There was a wild honeysuckle intwined in the roots of this large azalea and choking it to death.
You may set petunias now and and as soon as the danger of frost has passed plant most others as marigolds, vinca, impatients, begonia and many others.
When spring bulbs have finished blooming and turned brown, trim the unsightly tops, and they will make some beautiful flowers next year.
Mulch beds this keeps moisture in and makes the beds more attractive,if your lucky it will also keep weeds to a minimum.
It's time to think of that vegetable garden now.You should get the ground ready so that when danger of frost has passed you will be ready to plant. My favorite time is Good Friday, but most of the time I will jump out there and get anxious before that. You have to know that you are taking a chance of a frost killing the tender plants if you plant now,but you will have early vegetables.Vegetables to plant from mid March through April are beans, collards, mustard, turnips, cabbage, broccoli, swe et corn, cantaloupes, squash, cucumbers watermelons, okra and peas.Transplant tomatoes, pepper, and eggplant.
