Mega Man Battle Network on the Gameboy Advance has been one of Capcom's most profitable line of games. The series has spawned 7 games, 4 of which have have two different versions (like Pokemon). The games have also spawned a popular tv show, and also an electronic card game which is popular among kids.
The first game of the series started you off as Lan, a grade schooler, who went to school and learned how to net battle. His navi pet Mega Man was used to jack into the NET and once walking in the NET you would occassionally run into random battle with viruses. To battle them, a grid of 3 by 6 squares would appear. Half of the region, 3 by 3 blue squares, Mega Man could be moved freely, while in the other 3 by 3 red squares, the enemy can move. Mega Man can fire a weak attack with the B button, which can be charged then fired to give slightly more damage to the enemy. Since the enemy is moving, you must move to where the enemy is and fire. There is a Custom gauge and when it fills up pressing R will bring up randomly selected chips from your chip folder. You can choose a combination of matching chips and then fire them with the A button in the order you selected. The Attack chips are generally much stronger than your weak normal attack, but fire in different ways. Some Attacks spread to different squares, some attack enemies behind the original target, some go through a single line and attack all enemies on that like, etc. Other than attacks, chips can allow you to take squares from your enemies field ( increasing your area to move and decreasing your opponents movement area), recover your HP (health), increase attack power, or counter. There are also special chips which can summon Navi friends to do various things to help you. The chip folder can hold 60 chips, and you can adjust it as much as you want, but only have four of one type of chip in your folder.
In the story, random occurrences and malfunctions by viruses made by the WWW threaten the peace of your small town. So you as Lan and mega Man must stop Dr. Wily from carrying on with his evil. You also have many close friends like Mayl and her pet Roll, Dex and his pet Gutsman, Yai and her pet Glideman, Claud and his pet Protoman,etc. One wonderful thing about the games is no matter how heated your battles become and how close to the end you get, it still feels fun and light-hearted. The town is always slow, small, and peaceful and there are always sidequests to do. Definately check this game out.
