Sanes woke up suddenly, he felt as if something was wrong. He looked over at his nightstand and picked up his watch. It was 1:00 in the morning. He had screwed up again. He quickly cleaned himself up and changed into cleaner clothes. He shuffled down the hallway towards Wicks’ room. He was thinking of an explanation when he say Dr. Eden, one of Wicks’ old accomplices, come out of the room. Wicks stopped in his tracks and tried to hide in the shadows so that Eden wouldn’t see him. He heard Wicks’ voice talking, he couldn’t hear him very well, but he heard the name Kid. Wicks had Kid. Sanes stomach flipped, he suddenly didn’t fell well. He closed the door which Eden had left open and pressed his ear against it. He heard Wicks tell the boy all about the plan and then he heard the boy agree to look after Theresa and Jeremiah. He heard footsteps and got as far away from the door as he could with out being noticed. Jake had brought Kid out and was now taking him downstairs. Was Wicks sending him back already? Didn’t he want to make sure that Kid was going to be loyal to him? Well of course he wouldn’t be loyal, but at least he wouldn’t be in the way. Sanes was trying to sneak back to his room when he heard someone call his name.

“Sanes, get in here.” Sanes gulped, how did Wicks know where he was?

“Yes Mr. Wicks, sir.”

“How come I have to pay good money for someone else to do your job?”

“I’m sorry sir, I had everything planned, remember I even had you sign that thing with Louise’s signature.”

“I knew that wouldn’t work, but I did need you out of the way for the night so that I could get the boy.”

“What is my punishment sir?”

“You are to go back to St. Joe and run things from there. You will send me a wire everyday on your accomplishments, and if there are none you will turn yourself in for the murder of me. Wicks smiled.

“Yes sir.” Sanes turned to leave. Then he remembered something from the conversation he had overheard between Wicks and the Kid. “Sir?”

“Yes.”

“You told the Kid that he was going to St. Joe to take care of Theresa and Jeremiah.”

“Yes.”

“Well, I thought to surprise you that I would have Theresa and Jeremiah sent here. They’re going to arrive tomorrow. I am sorry sir, I will leave tomorrow on the stage.” Sanes left as quickly as he could. He didn’t want to hear what had been added on to his punishment. Then he had a good idea. He had a lot to do before the stage in the morning. He ran to his room and glanced at his watch. It was 2:30; he only had a few hours before the stage left. He headed across the street to the other hotel, to Louise.
