Malawi

Destination: Malawi, Africa.
My sister Mary and I decided that a trip to Africa was in order (we're trying to hit all the continents). A good friend of mine was stationed in Malawi with the Peace Corps so that's where we went for two short weeks. We saw a lot of the small country in what time we had. For those of you who don't know, Malawi is located near Mozambique. It's a small, thin country that curls around Lake Malawi. We went to a reserve for three days, not long enough!! We were treated like royalty with cool tents to stay in - monkeys often played in the trees overhead - and we had two safaris a day, one on the river and the other at dusk into the evening. Amazing stuff!! After that we headed north to a beach resort called N'Jaya. I was sick at the time and managed to sunburn myself on top of it so we stayed there a bit longer than expected. After that we went to Melanie's village of Enyezini where she was a teacher. We only had one night there before we had to head back to Lilongwe (the capital) for our flight home. It's a beautiful country with wonderful people and even though someone stole my shoes, Malawi is highly recommended by me!!

Night Safari

This is Mary, myself and Melanie on our range rover before our night safari took off. What you see on the front of the hood is the seat and large searchlight for the guide to use. I'm glad I didn't have to sit there! Also note the side of the driver's seat - they drive on the other side of the road. While we didn't get to see any carniverous animals, we did see hundreds of hippos, monkeys, crocodiles and very beautiful, exotic birds.

N'Jaya

I snapped this as we left N'Jaya resort. The water was amazing. I hear that this area is called the 'Carribean of Africa' and I can see why. On the beach you can see chalets that are for rent. We tried that for one night but opted to pay a bit more for real beds, mosquito nets and a private bath. Sometimes you've gotta go cush! Of course, most people wouldn't consider our step-up to be that great. All the water at the resort was cold and tended to shut off several times a day. But to us, it was a treat!

N'Jaya

As we left Melanie's, we had a 15km walk back to the nearest place to catch a ride back to town. The dirt is really that red! You can see maize growing and that's Melanie's favorite mountain in the back! Melanie had to follow this same path every time she needed groceries or for anything else she might need. All I know is that I could never handle the Peace Corps!
