THE REAL CHRISTMAS

Missionary pat Bates, Oklahoma

Since this is the blessed season of the birth of our Lord, I was thinking about what to say to all of you this month, and of course, the Holy Spirit gave me the answer.

In 1991, I was the Executive Secretary to the Superintendent of Victory Christian Schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  About 2 weeks before Christmas, a reporter and cameraman from one of the local TV stations arrived unannounced at the school office.  They wanted to interview some of the children about “Christmas.”  I was a bit apprehensive, so I called the boss. He said to allow them to do what they wanted as long as they didn’t disrupt classes and as long as the Elementary principal accompanied them.

I was very curious as to what they wanted of the children, so I followed them around.  They went to a first grade classroom and waited for recess to begin.  When the children came out of the room, the reporter stopped one of the children and asked him a question: “What is Santa giving you this Christmas?”  The little boy looked at the reporter, smiled and said, “Santa Clause isn’t real!”  The reporter then asked, “Well then, where do your presents come from?”  The little boy said, “My Mommy and Daddy and my Grandpa and Grandma.”

The reporter was a little disturbed and decided to seek out a older child, so he went to a 2nd grade classroom.  He stopped a little girl and asked her, “What is Santa giving you for Christmas?”  She said, “Santa is just a story and he doesn’t exist.”  So he asked the little girl who she would receive her presents from and got the same answer as the little boy had given.

He tried 2 more students and got the same type of answers.  He became very suspicious and asked the Principal, “Do you brainwash the students here to believe what your religion thinks is right?”  “Do you really teach them these things?”  The Principal just smiled and said, “We don’t teach anything about Santa Clause here, whether he exists or whether he doesn’t.”  Then the reporter, becoming “pushy,” said, “Then why do they believe these things?”

The Principal smiled again, and said, “I guess most of the parents, like myself, just tell our children about the birth of Jesus as being the real meaning of Christmas.  We just don’t lie to our children.  Do you?”  The reporter did not respond . . . he and the cameraman left.

On the 10:00 p.m. news the next evening, the interviews of the children were run in their entirety, including the Principal’s comments.  We were, to say the least, very surprised, but happy with the program.  This TV station had historically been opposed to all of the Christian ministries in the area, but had somehow become a bit softer in their opinions since the interviews.

DON’T FORGET TO HAVE A BIRTHDAY PARTY ON CHRISTMAS FOR JESUS!!
