A.        A MEMORIAL OBSERVANCE

MEMORIAL = SERVING TO HELP PEOPLE REMEMBER SOME PERSON OR EVENT.

            1.         CORINTHIANS 11:23-2623: For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:24: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25: After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26: For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

2. REMEMBER WHAT THE LORD ENDURED FOR US WHEN HE DIED TO PAY FOR OUR SINS.

3.     THE LORD’S SUPPER IS A MEMORIAL…

  A. OBSERVANCE.

B. SYMBOLIC OBSERVANCE

SYMBOLIC = OF OR EXPRESSED IN A SYMBOL = OBJECT USED TO REPRESENT SOMETHING

1. ELEMENTS ARE SYMBOLS INVOLVED IN HIS SACRIFICE AS THE LAMB OF GOD IN PROVIDING OUR SALVATION.

  2. BREAD = REPRESENTS THE BODY OF CHRIST.

                        I PETER 2:22-24

JESUS, THE SINLESS ONE TOOK OUR SINS UPON HIMSELF

HE BECAME OUR SUBSTITUTE, BEARING OUR SINS

HE DIED TO PROVIDE FORGIVENESS AND LIFE FOR A WORLD OF SINNERS

THIS IS WHAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER WHEN WE PARTAKE OF THE BREAD IN OUR OBSERVANCE OF THE LORD’S SUPPER.

3. THE CUP = SYMBOLIZES THE BLOOD OF THE LORD JESUS, WHICH WAS SHED TO PAY FOR THE SINS OF THE WORLD

MARK 14:2424: And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR THE BLOOD OF CHRIST, WHICH WAS SHED TO SECURE OUR REDEMPTION AND TO CLEANSE US FROM SIN.

1.     THE BREAD AND THE CUP ARE SYMBOLIC OF THE BODY AND THE BLOOD OF CHRIST.  THEY REMIND US OF WHAT HE ENDURED TO PROVIDE FOR US, SALVATION.

2.     THE LORD’S SUPPER IS A SYMBOLIC OBSERVANCE.

A CONTINUING OBSERVANCE CONTINUING =

1. LUKE 22:14-20 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.

15: And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer:

16: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

17: And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

18: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

19: And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

20: Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

BELIEVERS FROM THE EARLIEST DAYS OF THE CHURCH TO THE PRESENT TIME HAVE OBSERVED THE LORD’S SUPPER.

3. ACTS 2:4242: And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

4. I CORINTHIANS 11:2626: For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

BELIEVERS EVERYWHERE ‘CONTINUE’ TO REMEMBER JESUS’ DEATH THROUGH THIS ORDINANCE.

5.         THE LORD’S SUPPER IS A CONTINUING OBSERVANCE.

A CHURCH OBSERVANCE:

1.         CELEBRATING THE LORD’S SUPPER IS A SOLEMN MATTER.  CONDUCTED WITH REVERENCE AND WITH A REFLECTION UPON THE GREAT PRICE PAID FOR OUR SALVATION BY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

2.         CARELESSNESS IN ITS PRACTICE AMONG THE CORINTHIANS BELIEVERS HAD RESULTED IN ILLNESS AND EVEN DEATH FOR SOME OF THEM.

3.         I CORINTHIANS 11:29-3029: For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

30: For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

WE MUST ISSUE WARNINGS AGAINST ENTERING INTO THIS OBSERVANCE CARELESSLY OR IRREVERENTLY.

4.         SCRIPTURES GIVE NO COMMAND AS TO HOW OFTEN IT SHOULD BE OBSERVED

E.                              SUMMARY:

1. THE LORD’S SUPPER IS A MEMORIAL OBSERVANCE

2. A SYMBOLIC OBSERVANCE

3. A CONTINUING OBSERVANCE

4. A CHURCH OBSERVANCE
