REMEMBER ME

Rev DL Whittaker, Washington

Someone came to my house yesterday and asked what taking communion meant to me.  Having not been asked this before, I had to think a minute, but then I replied: "Taking communion means taking a special moment to reflect on Christ's suffering, death and the shedding of His blood for my sins. All our sins.”

I have witnessed many services of communion, and not all churches choose to observe this ceremony the same way.

When Christ broke bread with the disciples, He said, "As oft as you come together, do this in remembrance of me."

I have no problem with weekly communion personally, however, when it becomes just a ritual where people take of the emblems without self-examination, then I have a real problem.  Why?

Ø      Because, to take these emblems just to look good in the eyes of those around us, is wrong.

Ø      To take of the emblems without self-examination to see if we are worthy to take them, is wrong,

Ø      The word specifically warns us of this sin, and we will answer for it when Christ comes again.

I have been in churches where people took the sacraments when they were drinking liquor, living in adultery, and so on, and to me this is wrong.

Folks, Easter is upon us, and the reason we celebrate this day is to celebrate the fact that Jesus is no longer on the cross, or in the grave, but very much alive. Hopefully He is alive in your hearts, and without pretense.

It is understood that we are not perfect, thus we make many mistakes, but we have the promise that if we ask forgiveness, we will be forgiven and that's the long and the short of it. It's when we don't ask for forgiveness, or we think that because we went forward and said some words that were told us to say, that we err. It must come from the heart. Not from the head.

In a service the other day, a pastor told his parishioners that if they took communion, they would know where they were going. That to me is false hope, and shame on that pastor.

Let's grow in the Lord, get close to him and know for sure where you are going.

Happy Easter,

Dave
