BE A BEAR… ER!

Dianne Olsen, SW Washington

Recently I was driving to a doctor’s appointment, when I came to a red light, ugh....I sat impatiently at this light that is ALWAYS a really long one, ugh... again! As I murmured to myself, like the good Christian that I am, a couple came walking across the cross walk.

Now this couple looked to be in their fifties. But what caught my attention was HOW they were walking together. The gentleman, a completely appropriate description in this case, had his arm gently under his wife’s arm in a loving, tender effort to assist her along their walk. But, that was not the only thing that caught my eye; he was also carrying her rather large purse (and it did not match his outfit!!).

My heart melted as I watched this couple cross my path, and I thought to myself how God is like that man, to us. He gently holds us as we walk our journey, and even carries our purse, and as any woman can testify, a purse is often a burden, can I hear an amen?!

Then I chuckled to myself as I thought of the many times my husband would roll his eyes whenever I would ask him to hold my purse for a minute, he would say, “I don’t want to be seen holding a purse!” It must be a “guy” thing! Then I began to think about how important it is for us to be like that man, to each other. Not just to our spouses and family, but to our friends.

Webster’s dictionary defines bear as-“to support, hold up, carry or convey.” And we thought it meant a big hairy animal that could eat us in one gulp! Romans 15: 1 & 2 says, “We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification.” And Ephesians 4:2 says, “Be completely humble and gentle: be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

So, I would encourage us all to be like that gentleman-to lovingly and tenderly assist others in their journey, to assist and to support, hold up and sometimes carry each others burdens. We can do that by just being there to listen, sometimes to pray for, and maybe sometimes it means to speak a word of comfort. Whatever it looks like really doesn’t matter, when it is done in love, the result is the same. Have a great spring!
