Just an Ole’ Rag Doll

Dianne Olsen, SW Washington

Ephesians 5:27 “That He might present to Himself a glorious church, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.”

When we as sinners read that text, it can be dark and foreboding, because we are painfully aware of our imperfections. I am relaying this story in the hopes that you can see this scripture from a new perspective.

Many years ago a little girl asked to accompany her grandfather on the journey to town in the family iron-wheeled wagon, taking along with her the rag doll her mother lovingly made for her. The road was rough and rocky, causing them to bounce every which way. Soon they hit a rather large rock that lay in the road, causing the little girl to lose her grip on the doll, and as it hit the ground the big iron wheels rolled over it. The grandfather stopped the wagon and picked up the little rag doll exclaiming, “Jenny, I’m afraid your doll is all messed up.” But Jenny lovingly hugged the torn doll to her breast and replied, “Oh no Grandpa, she’s just perfect!”

This story is reflective of the love the Father has for us. Though completely wrinkled, torn, and with many a blemish, He loves us with an everlasting love. Romans 8:38 says: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

I think that pretty much covers ALL possibilities of separation, don’t you? I know in my life, there are times that I have struggled with sin (once or twice), and it took me some time after being free to realize that, despite it all, the God of the universe still loves me very much, and He sees something I can’t see. So the next time you are struggling with guilt and shame, remember the story of the ole’ rag doll, and know that the Father looks at you from different eyes. And I hope we can see each other the way Christ sees us.
