Who Am I?

1 Corinthians 13:12  Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.”

This scripture tells me that “…I am known”.  What a thought!  Almighty God knows me!  I might think I know myself and have myself all figured out.  I might even strive to follow the ancient philosopher’s advice “Know thyself”, but God knows the real me.  I’m glad HE has me figured out.

It seems like we spend a lifetime figuring out just who we are as individuals.  It has to do with identity.  It’s so easy to “put on airs” and act like we are somebody we’re really not, jumping through hoops, playing “the game”.  Just who AM I?  I have an idea, but God truly knows me.  That’s a big relief, but it also could be a cause for some squirming on my part.  If God knows me and all my imperfections, how could He still love and accept me?  It’s called grace.  Through the cleansing of Christ’s sacrifice, He accepts me just the way I am, and pours out immeasurable blessings on me…blessings I do not deserve.

David said, “Search me O God, and know my heart.” (Psalm 139:23)  Well, God already knew David’s heart.  David just came to the point where he had surrendered to the light of God’s Spirit shining in there, including those dark places.

I maintain that the best strategy to discover who I really am is to surrender to God and strive to know HIM better.  As I allow HIM to measure me in the balances, of course I’ll be “found wanting”.  But I can rest in the assurance that He is transforming me into the image of His Son who died for me.  In HIM I lack nothing.  Who am I?  I am His!
