INGREDIENTS FOR ANOINTING
Pastor Larry Gatlin, So Oregon
Greetings Everyone, In Jesus'
Wonderful Name!
In
February, Janice and I were excited to have the Lord speak to us through some
brothers and sisters in the Lord. It was like a sweet smelling aroma from
heaven. Which brings me to my message
for this month.
Moses
was given an exact recipe for mixing the anointing oil that was to be used
in worship in the Tabernacle. I want to look at these ingredients and see how
they can apply to our lives as well as how they apply to the anointing of the
Holy Spirit in us.
Exod
30:23-31
23 "Also take for yourself quality spices-- five hundred shekels of
liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty
shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane,
24 "five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the
sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil.
25 "And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment
compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing
oil.
26 "With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of
the Testimony;
27 "the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils,
and the altar of incense;
28 "the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver
and its base.
29 "You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever
touches them must be holy.
30 "And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them,
that they may minister to Me as priests.
31 "And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: 'This
shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations.
(NKJ)
There
are actually five ingredients. Myrrh, sweet cinnamon, sweet calamus, cassia,
and pure olive oil. Each of these ingredients has special significances
for us today.
First
we must realize that this oil is representative of the anointing that Father
wants the whole Body of Christ to carry upon their lives. Also you need to know
that a lot of the information that I will use in this article is taken
from the book, "The
Corporate Anointing" by Kelly Varner. I highly recommend that
you read this book if you are at all interested in the anointing for your life.
Let's
look at these spices and discover how they may apply to our lives today.
#1.
Myrrh
--- This is an important spice, it is not particularly sweet but it was
expensive in the times of Christ. In fact it is still expensive today. It was a
spice that was common for the wealthy and royalty. It was and is used as
a medicine. They used it for treating throat and bronchial problems.
But mostly it speaks of Royalty. Peter wrote that we are a Holy nation, a royal
priesthood.
1
Pet 2:9
But
ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar
people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of
darkness into his marvellous light: (KJV)
So
myrrh speaks of the Royalty of Jesus (King of Kings) and those who choose
to follow Him. Not so much that we should ever think that we, in or of
ourselves, are greater than our master, but that we should understand that
we belong to Him and so we have full access to all that He is and
desires for us to be.
#2.
Is the sweet cinnamon: Have you ever been under the
anointing that is so strong that you seemed to actually be smelling the
presence of the Lord? Well, you were. I believe we can be so in compassed by
the anointing that our natural senses will be affected by it. This spice
actually speaks of the sweetness of the Lord and his servant-hood.
Phil 2:7-11
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a
servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became
obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which
is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven,
and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father.
(KJV)
Jesus
put it all on the line for us. He was rejected, beaten, bruised and tormented
for our salvation. Yet he never lost His sweetness. How often have you and
I been in difficult situations and in the midst of it all our sweetness went
right out the window. I desire to be more like Jesus. Yet there are times when
if I allow myself I can loose my sweetness in a flash. I want the sweet
cinnamon to flow in my life fresh every day.
#3.
Sweet
Calmus: This spice speaks of the incarnate Christ who was the
expression of the Father sent to dwell among us. Our Scripture in Philippians
tells us that Jesus took on the form of a man; this is very significant for us.
If while in the form of a man Jesus expressed the fullness of God. Shouldn't
we, as humans be more willing to allow the fullness of God to be expressed
through our lives?
Eph 4:13-14
13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of
Christ;
14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried
about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning
craftiness of deceitful plotting,
(NKJ)
I want the sweet calamus to be flowing through me at all times.
#4.
Cassia: Cassia means to “cleave to”. I want to
cleave to Jesus as never before. Jesus new the full extent of this promise in
Isaiah.
Isa 40:31
31 But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall
mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall
walk and not faint. (NKJ)
I
want to soar to the Spiritual heights that are available to all those who learn
to flow with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. I want to be like Jesus and
touch people’s lives wherever I go.
#5. The pure
olive oil: --- Pure Olive Oil speaks of the fresh flow of
the Holy Spirit. It is highlighted in every chapter of the book of Acts and is
still fresh and flowing for the Church today. The Early Church was dependant
upon the anointing oil of the Holy Spirit. It is my conviction that we are not
a different church. That we are the continuation of the out pouring of the Holy
Spirit on the Day of Pentecost found in Acts chapter two. And that anointing is
still flowing to all who will receive it and walk in it today.
Acts 2:1-4
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one
accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind,
and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat
upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (KJV)
I
suppose that we could get into all kinds of discussions at this point. But I
really want to emphasis that there came a special anointing to minister to and
touch the lives of people everywhere the Apostles and Believers went.
Many
today seem to feel that the anointing is just for those who are in pulpit
ministry. But it is my hearts cry for the Body of Christ to realize that we are
all called to walk in the anointing. God desires to use every one. We are all
ministers and God always has anointing for His ministers.
Friends,
know today that you are called to be anointed and to touch the lives of every
one that you come in contact with.
