THE HEBREW NAMES OF GOD

Lynda MacDonald, Nova Scotia

The different names of God in scripture are more than fillers on a page. The names reveal to us who God is.  He is so immense in His character and attributes that one name can never describe who and what He is.

As we pray, it will open our faith up to use the Name (HaShem) that most describes how we view God in a particular situation.

For example- when healing is needed, we can pray Jehovah Rophe, You are the great healer…” When we need peace to reign inside of us, we pray “Jehovah Shalom, You are peace….”

El- El is a single title that appears 250 times. It stands for the character of His strength.

Elohim – (Genesis 1:1) Creator, Supreme God

Adonai –LORD –Master, Possessor, Owner (Exodus 13:17)

El Elyon – The Most High God –(Genesis 14:18)

El Roi – God Sees Me –Genesis 16:13

El Shaddai – The Almighty God; God all-Powerful (Genesis 17:1-2) This is a feminine title so we understand that God knows how to nurture us like a mother.

El Olam –The Everlasting God (Genesis 21:33)

El Gibbor – The Mighty God (God is the Warrior)(Isaiah 9:6)

El Illaya – The Most High (Aramaic) meaning No other Being is Higher (Daniel 3:26)

Melehk Elyon –King on High (Genesis 14:18)

Melehk ha Olam –King of the Universe (Genesis 21:33)

Shekinah –The very Presence of God

The Son inherited a more excellent name - Hebrews 1:4. From where did the Son inherit His name? From the Father, of course. Consequently, He could only inherit from the Father what the Father Himself possessed. Did the Father possess the name Jesus? The answer seems quite apparent especially when one keeps in mind that the Father is addressed by the abbreviated name Yah (Yeh) forty-nine times in the Old Testament (Psalm 68:4; etc.), which can only be found in the Hebrew name Yehshua.
