‘ABBA
FATHER!’
Romans 8:14-18
Isaiah 64:8
And I cried, “Abba
Father!” These words describing
God are found only three times in the New Testament. The following scriptures hold these words and
each time they are combined. (
I chose “Father” as the
name of God to write about this month. He is
my Father. I have felt His Spirit
comfort me when I was downhearted. I
have rested in His arms and lap and felt his touch on my brow, his breath on my
face. He has spoken to me in the dark of
night and the dawn of day. He answers my
prayers and corrects me when I go astray.
His favor I feel when I spend time on my face before Him, His hand
gently upon my head. I love my Heavenly
Father. He has been so incredible to me
my entire life. He has never let me go,
never left my side, has always provided abundantly for me and most of all… He
has always LOVED me. He is patient and
kind. He is everything to me, my provider, my protector, my counsel. His
promise is always in my ear and His praise forever on my lips. He is the “Father to the fatherless”. In Galatians it speaks about Him ‘adopting’
us as His children. How could we be so
lucky to have our Heavenly Father love us so much that He is willing to adopt
each of us and be our benefactor.
To me, “Father” is an
extremely soft and loving name. To me it
denotes One who looks out for me, provides for me,
spends time with me, is interested in me. He is my teacher, my confidante,
wholly trustworthy with my deepest thoughts and dreams. He is patient, loving, kind, gentle. Nurturing. To put it
into perspective that maybe some of you can understand, imagine yourself
standing on a great sandy beach next to the ocean. The warmth of the sun on your face is His
gaze, the wind in your hair His touch. The crash of the wave, His voice. The water, His love, which
totally envelopes me at the mere thought of Him. This is when I hear my voice echo with the
earth’s crying out… “Abba Father”.
Amen.
Maybe God as my Father
takes on a new significance for me as my own parents are
no longer with me. But it amazes me how
simple and luxurious His plan for His children is. In every passage, over and over it talks
about Family and relationship. If we are
lucky enough to grow up in a home centered on His teachings, every single
lesson prepares us for our relationship with our Heavenly Father. As we grow and leave our parents protective
arms, we have grown into a fruitful relationship with God. We become “adults” in God as well. We become responsible for our own
relationship. As special and loving and
awesome your relationship is with your earthly father, it is just a taste of
the relationship you can have with your Heavenly one. He DESIGNED the “office” of Father, He is the
MASTER.
