Jesus !
The rock that is higher than I
Marcus Straight, Washington
When doing research to do this article, I
found myself humming and singing to myself as I often do when faced with
“study”. This year has been a new year for
me as far as prayer and spending time in the Word goes. It has been more revealing to me and just more
on every front. When pondering what “Lion of Judah” meant for me in my heart- It gave way to
visions of Jesus being my protector. My safety. My mind went to music as it always does and I
just started remembering old worship songs.
How important the words of those songs were and are. How they say so much and mean so much and how
we often take them for granted.
Recently, during a most awesome worship service, the leader brought to
our attention about the words we were singing…. they weren’t merely lyrics to a
song… they were an offering of sweet smelling incense to our Lord. One that we pray He will find pleasing to
hear. Worship is such a sweet and
personal time for us in our walk and communion with Jesus.
It has grown ever increasingly important to me and I find myself doing
it at several intervals throughout my day.
I have said all of this to say… that one of my favorite worship songs is
based on the precious Psalm 61. It is a
magnificent and meaningful offering of praise to our Lord. It says everything that He is and will be to
us and more. It speaks of peace and
shelter of his wing and protection from the enemy. It speaks of His giving a heritage to us of
those who fear His name. It also speaks
of our vows to Him and it speaks of our praise as in a prayer. Jesus is the rock that is higher than I.
His is the protection and guidance that we seek and is freely
given. I am thankful that He attends
unto our prayers and hears our cries when we are overwhelmed. He leads us to the answer for everything… and
that is Jesus.
Amen
Psalm 61
1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart
is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a
strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I
will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.
5 For thou, O God, hast heard my vows:
thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.
6 Thou wilt prolong the king's life: and his years as many
generations.
7 He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth,
which may preserve him.
8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for
ever, that I may daily perform my vows.
