BREAD OF LIFE

Physical survival is dependant on food.  If we look at how we maintain physical life we can learn much about how to maintain spiritual life.  We are dependant on our parents to nurture us when we are new born. Mother’s milk is an extraction of her blood.  Leviticus 17:11- “the life of the flesh is in the blood.”  The life giving nutrients of the mother’s blood prepares us for the digestion of natural food.  It is interesting that for us to survive in the natural realm, something must die.  What we call food was once alive.  In order for something to be food, it must at one time have been alive.  The food that sustains our physical life at one time had it’s own life.  In order for us to have sustained life on earth, something must die!  The life of the earth keeps our earthly bodies alive.  Without earthly life, we would die.  The parent is the source of food for their new born offspring.

So in the spirit realm, our life is dependant on our parent.  Spiritual as well as our natural parents must supply us with life sustaining food.
Matthew 6:11- “Give us this day our daily bread.” When we read this scripture, understand that spiritual life comes from our Father in heaven. We need both daily physical food and daily spiritual food to stay alive.  One sustains our physical life the other sustains our spiritual life.

John 6:33- “For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”

John 6:35- “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

John 6:48- “I am that bread of life.”

When we were an infant, we required mother’s milk to survive the transition time it takes for us to get ready to eat natural food. So in the realm of the spirit, when we are first born-again we have need of the milk of the Word, until we can handle the meat of God’ s Word.

1
Peter 2:2- “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”

Some fail to grow to the stage were they can handle meat.

1 Corinthians 3:2-  I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.”

Have you noticed when an infant begins to be weaned from milk and starts eating solid food, that they spend a great deal of time spitting it out? How much like an infant many Christians are, when it comes to hearing the meat of God’s Word. One will never become liberated from an infants life, until they move on to
meatier food.

Hebrews 5:14- “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

As one begins to eat natural food they gain more capacity to eat other foods. So it is with God’s Word, the more you use it, the more you can use. The principle, that in order to have life, one must eat life, is still true.
It is no better demonstrated then with the death of
Christ.

John 6:55- “ For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.”

The spiritual life is birthed and sustained by the death of
Jesus. Our spiritual food is Jesus. We cannot have spiritual existence apart from the life of Christ. In the natural realm we must continually rely on more and more food. That means there must be more and more life sacrificed for our survival. However this is only true because the life we are eating is temporal. The life that Jesus provided was eternal life and there is no further need for death to supply us with continuing life. The supply never runs out! There is no end to the nutritional value of Christ’s life.

1
Peter 3:18-  For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit”

How does this work?  We first have physical life and then when we hear the Word of God, and respond to it, we are born a second time into spiritual life.

John 3:3-6
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

In order to become born into the spiritual realm, one must become a product of God’s Word. The creative power of God’s spoken word, is what created all things.

Hebrews 11:3- “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

As creation occurred at the spoken Word of God, so to, we must be a product of God’s spoken Word.

2 Corinthians
5:17- “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

The Bible is the written record of God’s spoken Word and has the same creative power as the spoken Word of God. If we receive the truth of the written Words of God, we shall be born of the Spirit.
Jesus made this point clear when he said-

John 6:63- “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Jesus’ Words have the power to give life, He demonstrated it by raising the dead. He did this to prove to the would-be doubters that as He had power to forgive sin, which brings death; He also had power to give life. In order to have life there must be a giving of life, both in the natural realm and in the spiritual realm.  Saved people are born into the spiritual realm by the Word; and they are also sustained by the Word of God.

Matthew 4:4- “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

John 6:33-  For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”

The source of our life is
Jesus. Physical beings must eat to live; so also spiritual beings must eat to live. Jesus is not only the source of our spiritual food, but also the source of our liquids.  He is what we are to spiritually drink as well.

John 6:35-  And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

Jesus is an everlasting source of drink for us.

John 4:14-  But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Jesus is our eternal source of food.

John 6:48-  I am that bread of life.”

Jesus provides us with eternal food.

John 6:51-  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

Jesus is the Living Word in heaven. The Bible is the written Word, that is our spiritual food on earth.

Matthew 4:4-  “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. “

Matthew6:11-   “Give us this day our daily bread.”
