AND ALL WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST Acts
1:8 But ye
shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall
be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria,
and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts
2:4 And
they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. After the Holy Ghost is
come upon you, you will have power and witness of Jesus. Notice there are two
specific results that are mentioned, first power then the ability to witness
(speak). 2Peter
1:21 For the
prophecy (Old Testament) came not in old time by the will of man: but holy
men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Notice that the Old
Testament came first when the Holy Ghost moved on men and then they spoke. Mark
12:36 For
David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on
my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David spoke while
under the power of the Holy Ghost. Luke
1:35 And the
angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and
the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy
thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke
1:46-47 And
Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God
my Saviour. Mary while under the
power of the Holy Ghost spoke. Lk:1:41-42 And it came to pass,
that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her
womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a
loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb. Elisabeth spoke while
under the power of the Holy Ghost. Lk:1:67-68 And his father
Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be
the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed His people. Zacharias spoke while
under the power of the Holy Ghost. Luke
1:15 For he,
(John the Baptist) shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine
nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his
mother's womb. Luke
1:80 And the
child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day
of his shewing unto Israel. John the Baptist was
filled and grew strong in the Holy Spirit. Luke
2:25-30 And,
behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man
was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy
Ghost was upon him. 26: And it was revealed
unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen
the Lord's Christ. 27: And he came by the
Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to
do for him after the custom of the law, 28: Then took he him up
in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29: Lord, now lettest
thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30: For mine eyes have
seen thy salvation Simeon under the power
of the Holy Spirit prophesied. Acts
4:8 Then
Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people,
and elders of Israel, Peter filled with the
Holy Spirit spoke. Acts
4:31 And
when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled
together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the
word of God with boldness. At this second filling
they all spoke. Acts
8:15-17 Who,
when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy
Ghost: 16: (For as yet he was
fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus.) 17: Then laid they their
hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Simon the Sorcerer saw
they were filled and wanted to buy the power, what did he see that convinced
him the Holy Spirit had come? Acts
9:17 And
Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on
him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the
way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and
be filled with the Holy Ghost. Saul later named Paul
immediately began his ministry of teaching God’s word. Acts
13:9-11 Then
Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on
him, 10: And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child
of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert
the right ways of the Lord? 11: And now, behold, the
hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun
for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he
went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. Paul demonstrated the
power of the Holy Spirit. Luke
2:15-16 And as
the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John,
whether he were the Christ, or not; 16: John answered, saying
unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I
cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: John the Baptist told
the people he was not the Messiah but that when He did come He would baptize
with the Holy Spirit and fire. Notice Jesus would baptize with Holy Spirit
and Fire. John
1:33 And I
knew him not: but he (God the Father) that sent me to baptize with water, the
same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and
remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. John was convinced
that Jesus was the baptizer with the Holy Spirit. John
1:29 The
next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God,
which taketh away the sin of the world. John recognized Jesus
as the Savior as well as the baptizer in the Holy Spirit. Matt
3:13-17 Then
cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14: But John forbad him,
saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15: And Jesus answering
said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all
righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16: And Jesus, when he
was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were
opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and
lighting upon him: 17: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son,
in whom I am well pleased. We see the three
persons of the God Head present when Jesus was baptized with the Holy Spirit.
The Father spoke from heaven, the Holy Spirit appeared as a dove, and Jesus
rose out of the water. Luke
4:1 And
Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the
Spirit into the wilderness. The Holy Spirit was
the equipping and power Jesus needed to resist the temptations of the Devil. Acts
10:38 How God
anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about
doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with
him. The result of Jesus’
being baptized with the Holy Spirit was the ability to preach the Gospel to
all and do signs, wonders and miracles. Acts
10:44-46 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all
them which heard the word. 45: And they of the
circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter,
because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46: “For they heard them
speak with tongues, and magnify God” How did they know
these received the baptism? They heard them speak in other tongues. Acts
11:15-17 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on
us at the beginning. 16: Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said,
John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy
Ghost. 17: Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto
us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand
God? These recognized that
as the Holy Spirit fell in Acts chapter two so He had fallen on these in the
same way. Acts
19:2-7 He said
unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said
unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3: And he said unto
them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4: Then said Paul, John
verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that
they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ
Jesus. 5: When they heard this,
they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6: And when Paul had
laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with
tongues, and prophesied. 7: And all the men were
about twelve. Paul laid Hands on
them to receive they immediately received power and spoke in other tongues.
This is separate from John the Baptist’s baptism. Luke
11:13 If ye
then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much
more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? We have but to ask the
Father to give us the baptism of the Holy Spirit and we will receive. John
7:38-39 He that believeth on
me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living
water. 39: (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on
him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus
was not yet glorified.) Jesus described the
baptism with the holy Spirit as a river flowing out of us. A river of words. Luke
12:12 For the
Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. The role of the Holy
Spirit is to give us words to speak from God. John
14:26 But the
Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he
shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have said unto you. As we read the
scriptures they are stored in our hearts and the Holy Spirit will bring them
up out of our hearts to speak forth. 1Cor
2:13 Which
things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which
the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. The Holy Spirit is
used here to teach us words that are of spiritual origin. John
15:26-27 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you
from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father,
he shall testify of me: 27: And ye also shall
bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. The Holy Spirit in us
will equip us to testify of the truth of Jesus to others. John
16:7
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away:
for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart,
I will send him unto you. Part of the reason for
Jesus’ leaving this Earth was to send us the Holy Spirit. John
16:13-14 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide
you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he
shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14: He shall glorify me:
for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. As the Holy Spirit in
us glorifies Jesus, so we in like manner will glorify Jesus to others. Luke
24:46-49 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved
Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47: And that repentance
and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations,
beginning at Jerusalem. 48: And ye are witnesses
of these things. 49: And, behold, I send
the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem,
until ye be endued with power from on high. The followers of Jesus
were to remain in Jerusalem until they had been empowered by the Holy Spirit
before beginning their ministries. Acts
1:4-5 And,
being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not
depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith
he, ye have heard of me. 5: For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized
with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Jesus tells His
followers to wait to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Acts
1:8 But ye
shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall
be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria,
and unto the uttermost part of the earth. They were to receive
power and be witnesses when they received the Holy Spirit. Acts
2:1-4 And
when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in
one place. 2: And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing
mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3: And there appeared
unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4: And they were all
filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance. Notice true to form
they received power and spoke in other tongues. The tongues of fire
rested on them and the spoke boldly with fire! Acts
2:33
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the
Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now
see and hear. This is confirmed by
Peter as the baptism John the Baptist and Jesus spoke of. We have ample proof
that the baptism with the Holy Spirit imparts power to the believer and it
imparts divine utterance. The evidence of the
baptism in the Holy Spirit will be the demonstration of power and the
speaking in unlearned tongues. Have you received
since you believed? HAVE A GOD DAY! Pastor Ron |
