WHEN YOU ARE TEMPTED

The character of temptation:

1Cor:10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

   a. you will not be tempted above your ability to resist

   B. you will be provided a way of escape

   C. you will be given the ability to handle it

The lord knows how to deliver us out of temptations:

2 Peter 2:9: “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations”

Hebrews 2:18: For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

<> Jesus was tempted in three areas after His baptism.

1John 2:16: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

<> Jesus was tempted with the lust of the flesh (food).

Matt 4:3: And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

<> Jesus was tempted with the lust of the eyes.

Matt 4:5: Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

<> Jesus was tempted with the pride of life.

Matt 4:8: Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

Satan used the same plan of attack when he tempted Eve.

<> Eve was tempted in three areas in Eden.

1John:2:16: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

               a. Eve was tempted with the lust of the flesh (food).

Gen 3:6 “the woman saw that the tree was good for food”

               b. Eve was tempted with the lust of the eyes.

Gen 3:6 “it was pleasant to the eyes”

               c. Eve was tempted with the pride of life.

Gen 3:6 “to be desired to make one wise”

After jesus was tempted in the wilderness he commanded the devil

to leave but he would come back and tempt him again.

Luke 4:13: And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

   A. Jesus was tempted in all points like we are.

Heb:4:15: For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

1. Jesus had no sin.

2Cor:5:21: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

2. Satan could find no wrong in Jesus.

Jn:14:30: Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

3. Satan is the god of this world.

2Corintians 4:4: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

B. Satan’s other temptations of Jesus.

               1. the Pharisees tempted Jesus.

Mark 8:11: “And the Pharisees came forth” “tempting him”

               2. the Sadducees tempted Jesus.

Matt16:1: “The Sadducees came, and tempting him”

3. The Lawyers tempted Jesus.

               Mt:22:35: “a lawyer” - “tempting him”

4. The Scribes, Chief Priests and Chief of the People tempted Jesus.

Lk:19:47: “the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him”

James1:12: Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Rev 2:10: Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

James 1:13: Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

1. Watch your words when you are tempted.

2. Do not attribute evil to God.

3. Evil is no temptation to God.

4.God dose not tempt any man.

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

   1. Temptation comes to everyone.

   2. Temptation will enter through the draw of our lust.

   3. Temptation’s method is to entice.

James 1:15: Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

1. Linger with lustful enticement long enough and it will move from thought to action.

2. When it is acted on it will become a habit and when a habit is done long enough it will become a life style and that will have the fruit of death.

3. Death is living outside of the will and plan of God.

James1:16: Do not err, my beloved brethren.

1. Do not err, do not underestimate the devil.

1Peter 5:8: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

   2. Christians are not immune to the wages of sin.

1John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

3. Christians can sin and bring on their own death.

Galatians 6:1: Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

1John 5:16: If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

   4. If a Christian is determined to ignore God’s will they will reap what they sow.

Galatians 6:7  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Hosea 8:7 “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind”

1Corinthians 5:5: To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1Corinthians 3:15: If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

It is our responsibility to be on guard.

Matt 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

2Peter 2:9: “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations”
