Reject Letter Commentary: Cornell

Note: The following is the actual rejection letter I received from Cornell University, along with my own commentary. The letter will be in italics and my commentary will be lead by Me:

Dear Joyce:

I am sorry that we were unable to offer you admission to the mathematics Ph.D. program.

me: BLEEP!

The number of students who can be accepted is limited, and the overall quality of applications is very high, so it is not possible to offer admission to many of the excellent students who have applied.

me: Where can I get my refund? I want a refund for my appliaction. GRRR.

In your case, you were on our wait-list,

me: NOO!!!!! So this is what guys feel like when girls they like tell them they just want to be friends.

...and I have hesitated to send this letter until now. I had hoped that, were there a sufficient number of early negative responses, I might have been able to offer you admission with financial support. Unfortunately, this did not occur.

me: it is a truly sad day for my mathematical career when I didn't even make the first cut to stay ON the waitlist. For those of you who did get letters of acceptance but decided to wait this long to say no, PHHHH :p

Thank you for your interest in Cornell. Given the strength of your application, you probably had several good options from which to choose.

me: Noo! Come back, Cornell! I want to go to an east coast school! CHU!!!!

We wish you success in continuing your mathematics education.

me: Grumble grumble...

Sincerely, (signed by Chairman of Graduate Admissions Committee.)
