Ghost Heart
She saw a flicker
Proceeding cautiously
She felt the eerie chill
She blinked
Having tread ever so carefully

and assumed it indicated
a living beating heart.
she caught first glimpse
of the stark truth.
Suddenly frightened
it stopped her cold.
of realization
twas a mere fossil
life drained
like some ghost town.
wondering who had forgotten
to put up the warning signs.
over such familiar
yet now unmistakably
treacherous ground
once reversed
she couldn't depart
fast enough.
