In A Moment
I let my young birddog Cecee
A fine tuned athlete she was
Her normal routine would be
But that fateful day
But she found it
And in that moment
In an instant
RRE
out of her yard on our ranch
to stretch her legs
chase a rabbit
or a cow
smell the smells
check her turf
that gorgeous summer day last year.
and a special animal to boot
with unique markings
gentle disposition
some very expensive training.
to join her bunny and birdy friends
see what was new with them
in the back fields.
she took a very wrong turn
across a county road
with almost no traffic.
that truck of her destiny
and my heart sank
when I heard the brakes
and her cries
her leg and pelvis crushed.
her whole world changed
that splendid specimen
that beautiful creature
who most folks would have put down
became a cripple.
becoming yet one more example
of the fragility
of our sometimes
fairytale existance.
