Private Tutor for Hire!

Available in central Indiana as of July, 2002.

Private tutoring is a time-honored tradition. Before public education was widely available, many of those who could afford it had their children educated by private instructors who were versed in various disciplines, and this educational method holds great value even in our modern society. For example, you can give your children a jump-start on globalization by starting them in a foreign language before it's available in the local school system, or, alternatively, you could make up for the foreign language instruction you didn't get in school by being tutored in your spare time.

German is my second language. I speak German fluently and am reasonably familiar with its literary history. I love the subject and am more than happy to teach it one-on-one or in small groups. When I teach German, I use many resources, and I tailor a personal curriculum to the individual student's needs. I teach not only the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and oral comprehension, but also elements of culture and history, so that the language comes alive for the student. I will teach anyone 8 or over who wants to learn the subject. Today's Germany has a very strong economy and a flair for international business, so German language skills can provide a real edge in modern corporate America. In addition, German cultural heritage is incredibly rich. The operas of Strauss and the poetry of the great Romantic Heinrich Heine can only be truly appreciated with a knowledge of German, just to list two examples.

In addition to German, I will tutor children in world geography, history, English grammar and literature, elementary and middle school science, mathematics up through basic algebra and geometry, and biology up to the high school level. Geography, of course, involves memorizing where countries are on a map, but there's much more to the discipline than that! Geography is a study of peoples and places, and how the two are related to each other. I teach geography with a very human approach and include on occasion fun cultural elements, such as food from another country. I also have the advantage of being well traveled, so that I can provide first hand knowledge of the geography of some places.

As a final note, I would like to mention that I am a fun tutor who is full of surprises. For example, I have been known to give a student a free dance lesson for getting a high grade on a quiz or test. I work my students hard, but I try to help them experience the joy that can be found in amassing knowledge.
