Subject: McElwain web site

I am responding to your email regarding the MCELWAIN website; what a nice website, and lots of interesting information. I regret, however, that I cannot make any connections to any of the information.

I am a descendant of BURGOYNE MCELWAIN, who was also known as Gain, Goin, Gam, and you have him listed as GUYNE MCELWAIN. This is my ggg grandfather. I regret that I cannot find any further information beyond him. He had two suspected brothers, DAVID and ANDREW. They were first in Orange Co. and then settled in Kortright Co. I am not having any success in finding out who their parents were and just where in Ireland they came from.

It is my understanding that he, BURGOYNE, fought with GEORGE WASHINGTON in the Rev. War in NY. I have found there are many variations of the spelling of our name, but it is all the same family. I do not know much about the two brothers either, they seem to be an illusive bunch. If you can give me any help here, I would be grateful. I do have some information, of course to present on my direct line. Let me know if you are interested.

(I'm always interested in putting more information on this website - Norma)

6. ROBERT3 MCELWAINE (ROBERT2, JAMES1) was born October 16, 1864, and died November 05, 1947 in Greater Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. He married EDITH EVELINE MILLIGAN April 14, 1898 in St. Andrews Church, Laman Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, daughter of JAMES MILLIGAN and SUSAN PARSONS. She was born 1878 in Singleton, New South Wales, Australia.
Notes for ROBERT MCELWAINE:
JOHN O'HARA from Graghadusson, Co. Cavan, Ireland went to Australia. He sponsored five young boys from his home area who arrived in Sydney 1879 on the Corona. One was WILLIAM MCALWAIN (reel #2141, 2490 NSW state records). WILLIAM'S were ROBERT & ELIZA. John O'Hara paid £2 deposit and the balance of the fare was paid by the government. It seems possible that WILLIAM is an older brother to ROBERT, and paved the way for his emigration later.
WILLIAM noted that he had a cousin in Sydney, named JAMES MC DONAGH.
It is believed that ROBERT MCELWAIN arrived in Sydney as an assisted migrant from Co. Cavan on 30 Sep 1883 on the Dharwar from Plymouth, England, although the passenger list gives his name as ANDREW. He was 18 years of age, from Cavan, and was a Presbyterian. There is no other reference to an 'ANDREW MCELWAIN' in NSW after 1883.
There were eight others from Cavan on this vessel, as follows:
JOHN and Mary A SMITH, both 21, RC, he a baker.
FRANCES COONEY, 26 ploughman, and his sister, MARY (COONEY), 24, both RC.
FRANCIS McMAHAON, 21
MARY COURTNEY , 24, RC
SARAH WITHERS, 18, Presb.
ROBERT ARGUE, 21, labourer, C of E.

On 18 Sep 1890 ROBERT MCELWAIN was appointed a probationary constable in the NSW Police. He was then 5' 10" with hazel eyes, brown hair, and a fresh complexion. He said he was a native of Ireland and had been a labourer, groom and barman before joining the police force. He was single, a Presbyterian and was judged to be of 'good appearance'. He was given number 6054 and sent to the North East District where a year later he was confirmed as an ordinary constable. The file gave his birthday as 16 Oct 1864 BCP (could this mean birth certificate provided?). He was paid 7 shillings a day.

In 1898 he married EDITH E MILLIGAN in Newcastle. She was the daughter of JAMES and SUSAN (nee PARSONS) of Patricks Plains who were married in 1875. EDITH was born in 1878. Edith was working in Newcastle as a domestic. The consent of JAMES MILLIGAN, father, was given as EDITH was under marriageable age.

ROBERT MCELWAIN was promoted to 1st class constable on 1 Jan 1900 and paid 8 shillings a day. Their daughter RITA (REITA) EDNA MCELWAIN was born in 1900 but died 5 Sep 1903. She was buried in the Uniting Church Cemetery of Glenridding, Singleton.

ROBERT E MCELWAIN was born 1903, and another son REGINALD B MCELWAIN was born three years later 1906.

One file says ROBERT was sent to the Southern District on 16 Jan 1906 and discharged on a pension 29 Feb 1908, but he was back in the lists Oct 1910 with pay at 7/6 a day. Another file shows him as an Ordinary Constable from 1 Apr 1910 and promoted back to 1st class on 13 May 1914. His later police record was not in the city when this research was done (by A. J. HARRISON in Tasmania).

A son AUBREY ALISTER MCELWAINr was born in 1914.
A librarian at Muswellbrook brought forward the record from the Supreme Court of NSW in the Probate Index - Volume M 1947-52, #338444 MCELWAIN, ROBERT, died at Cardiff 5 Nov 1947. His estate was probated. ROBERT'S death 5 Nov 1947 shows he had been in Australia for 66 years, making his arrival around 1880.

The death registration #1947/027533 shows ROBERT MCELWAIN, a retired police office, died of heart failure at Newcastle. His address at that time was Lookout Road, New Lambton Heights, Greater Newcastle. ROBERT'S parents were confirmed as ROBERT MCELWAINE, farmer, his mother ELIZA BEATTIE and his place of birth as Greaghadusson, Ireland. At the time of his death, ROBERT'S living children were ROBERT E MCELWAIN age 44, BRIAN (REGINALD) MCELWAIN 41, and AUBREY MCELWAIN 34, one daughter deceased.

Informant was son, ROBERT E MCELWAIN. On 6th November, ROBERT'S remains were cremated at Beresfield Cemetery.

ROBERT'S last will, dated 1 May 1924 left the whole of his estate to his wife EDITH EVELYN MCELWAINE, sole executrix, and was probated on 3 Feb 1948.
