The research on Daniel McElwain (b.1817),
his wife Rosetta C. McElwain (b.1823),
and his son Daniel C. McElwain (b.1862) is going very slow.
They lived in Cohoes, Albany, New York. Both men were attorneys.

I was interested in your web site.
I have done a lot of research and visited Co. Cavan in Ireland in 1994 where my ancestors were from. My great-grandfather was GEORGE MCELWAIN,
born c 1830, and remained in Cavan. However, I have never found any
siblings for him. Perhaps they emigrated.
I have some notes from a researcher in Co. Cavan and he mentions several who emigrated but couldn't put them in context. One was THOMAS MCELWAINE who married MARY ANDERSON in Cavan and emigrated. She would
have been born c 1800.
Another is a JAMES MCELWAINE, who died in a snowstorm in OTAGO in 1870,
age 37.
His brother THOMAS MCELWAINE died in 1908 age 70. Also mentioned was a SAMUEL ROBERT MCELWAINE.
I am especially interested in the JAMES who died in the snowstorm in OTAGO
Any help appreciated.

There is a MARIA A MCELWAIN, widow living in household of my g-gf JAMES J FLYNN (b. 1864 NY) in 1900 and 1910 in Brooklyn NY. This MARIA was the mother of JAMES FLYNN'S wife AGNES MCELWAIN. According to census, AGNES' mother was born in NY and her father was born in VT.
I recently found an 1869 directory of NYC and on it is listed a MARIA A MCElWAIN, widow of THOMAS J MCELWAIN. She is listed as a dressmaker at 173 Delancey St. Tracing further I see there was a Thomas J MCELWAIN in Civil War, 42nd NY INF. Enlisted Co G of this unit on 6/22/1861 Long Island NY age 32, then transferred to Co B, then discharged with disability 6/1862. Other records show that a THOMAS J MCELWAIN d. (I assume from war injuries) 3/30/1863 and widow MARIA A MCELWAIN applied for a pension.
Does anyone know if the MARIA A MCELWAIN (widow of THOMAS J) listed 1869 Brooklyn NY directory is the same MARIA MCELWAIN (widow of THOMAS J) listed on 1888, 1889 Brooklyn NY directory? And could she possibly be the same MARIA A MCELWAIN living with JAMES FLYNN Flynn family in Brooklyn NY in 1900 and 1910?
I will most likely send for the pension but was hoping someone may already have some info to tide me over while I wait the eons it takes for NARA to send info.
Thanks for any leads and would like to connect with any Brooklyn NY MCELWAIN researchers.
