Domed French Mantle Clock
Here is an exquisite Marti & Cie. clock. It's called "Vierge a la chaise No 2" (Seated Madonna No 2). The dial reads Desfray Orleans, and the base appears to be signed by M Desfray (see photo).
The clock is an 8 day time and strike on a tuned French bell. The dial is immaculate, and the case is in good condition. The pendulum is a replacement, and is too short (I plan to replace it), and there is a repair to the chair. The back of the chair was badly reglued, and was crooked. I removed the old glue, and re-repaired it, using J-B Weld, which worked wonderfully. I then painted over the repair, making it invisible.
The dome is craked, on the back, but seems stable. Someone has rimmed the base of the dome in white masking tape. I plan to replace thi at some time, but the dome fits snugly into the base, which has cupped, so I will need to use something thin.
The clock was purchased at an auction at a very good price. I don't think anyone else there knew the value or quality of the piece, and there was not much interest on it. I won it for $210.00 CDN (plus tax).
