This workshop was set up in 1885 under Southern
Maratha Railway to carry out maintenance, repairs to MG Loco, MG Carriage
and MG wagon. After the
formation of new zone on 1 April 2003, Hubli workshop came under South
Western Railway.
The gauge conversion at the total cost of Rs.1794.65 Lakhs from MG
to BG of this shop were taken up during 1995-96 for main activities of
overhauling of 75 BG coaches.
Conversion has been completed in a phased manner. Besides this, the workshop is
engaged in manufacture of duplicate for Diesel, Carriage and Wagon
components for entire South Central Railway and various other zones, bogie
sets for ICF/RCF. The
workshop has progressively reached to 90 POH of coaches (including 6 AC)
80 ICF Bogies frame and 8 CO-CO bogies per month.
The task of
conversion/modification of M&P items to suit the POH of BG coaches
were done at a minimum cost and with the ingenuity of the staff. This workshop has upgraded the
technology and skill in many areas and obtained ISO 9002
certification. The shop has an
independent power station and 3 standby generators (two AC generators each
of 500 KVA capacity and one DC generator of 400 KW capacity).
